Two Years Drop In India’s Life Expectancy in 2020 Due To Covid-19
A statistical report by the city-based IIPS’s (International Institute for Population Studies) researchers has disclosed that apart from affecting people’s lives all over the world, the Covid-19 outbreak has even affected India’s life expectancy by nearly 2 years.
The journal, BMC Public Health reported recently the analytical statement, which highlights the life expectancy drop at birth in both women and men because of the Covid-19 outbreak. Suryakant Yadav, a professor at IIPS is one of the authors of the article.
The report claimed that the life expectancy at birth in the year 2019 was 72 years for women and 69.5 years for men. Covid-19 dropped life expectancy to 67.5 years for women and 67.5 years for men in the year 2020.
The life expectancy at birth is computed based on the average time period a newly born is anticipated to live if the patterns of mortality during the birth time of the infant stay constant later.
The work carried out by Prof. Yadav additionally covered a factor known as the ‘length of life inequality’ and discovered that the recent pandemic has taken many
lives of men belonging to the age group 39-69.Scientists revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic had a detrimental effect on both the G0 (inequality in age at death) and e0 (life expectancy at birth). They also added that men were more vulnerable during this pandemic.
Ms. Yadav stated that there was a rise in Covid-19 mortality particularly for the individuals belonging to the age group 35-79 in the year 2020 in contrast to other years and this group has contributed profoundly to the fall.
This project was carried out to study the impact of Covid-19 on life expectancy and death patterns in India.
Dr. KS James, the director of IIPS mentioned that each time when India is hit an epidemic, figures of life expectancy at the birth drop. For example, following Africa’s HIV-AIDS epidemic, the life expectancy figures dwindled. After bringing the figure under control, it was recouped again.
