Standard Books For CSIR NET – How to Read Standard Books by Foreign Authors

Today let us discuss how to Read Standard Books by Foreign Authors for CSIR NET, GATE & DBT JRF Exams, and we are starting right now.

Biotecnika is probably one of the only institutes that always recommends a set of standard books in almost all its webinars. They are a No Match in terms of Knowledge depth and lucidity. But many times, students find difficulty in referring to it and come back to us saying that it’s very complex and needs assistance. So today I am going to give you 15 pointers which will help you do just that.

Number 1: Segregate & Divide: Segregate the chapters from the book as per CSIR, GATE, DBT syllabus, highlight the Table of contents and mark it thoroughly. This will help you pick only those topics which are needed for these competitive exams.

Number 2: Prioritize main Headings: The challenge here is You will get 6 months for CSIR preparation and in this span of time, completing 13 units becomes tedious. But we must study from authentic sources for guaranteed success. So the best way of doing that is

to focus on the headings or the main points(in Bold) covered for the concerned chapter/Topic. This way, we can cover the specified concepts faster. Now, if its the first time you are reading the concept, then you must not follow this tip, instead follow the next tip, which is

Number 3: Write & Learn: In this distraction-full era where you are bombarded with ads every 10 seconds, you must be focused, or else you will not be able to study. I personally deploy the write & learn Method, which is a brilliant way to keep your mind focused. Now, this simple formula depends on the idea that Our Mind is a machine that can do one task at a time if all the senses focus on it. So the trick is to club more than 2 sense organs together when you study and involve them to get your focus on the subject. This way you can study more in less time.

Number 4: Build the Flow: In his Book Ikigai, Authors Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia mention building the flow of work, which leads to happiness and work satisfaction. The same principle can be applied here. You need to create a distraction-free environment where you can achieve a flow state and not even realize how many hours you have studied. Once you are in the flow of studying, you can finish the most difficult chapters also. For this, you have to start with smaller topics every day and allow yourself to come in the flow of studying and then slowly switch to difficult topics or subjects.

Number 5: Compounding effect: Albert Einstein once said that the Compounding Effect is the world’s 8th wonder. You can utilize this in your favor by studying 1 topic per day and not finishing everything in a single day. When you create a habit of studying every day little by little, your ocean of knowledge fills up and you start achieving your study targets.

Number 6: Focus on First 10 Lines:- Concentrate on each paragraph’s first 10 lines for the chapter’s particular topic. This actually helps to get the idea of the concept first, then make notes on the same. This will spark interest and help you gain mileage to study more of that topic. Also, remember studying everything is not going to help you. If this is not the 1st time you are studying, you must do selective study and focus on important concepts first.

Number 7: Revision Points:- Whenever you are studying, make notes using the Cornell method. This will help you get ready-made revision notes. Additionally, almost every standard reference book has a chapter summary at the end of the chapter. Noting down the revision points given at the back of the chapters is really helpful for proper memorization. This way, we can even skip some chapters and get the revision points for your preparation because we have to remember one thing-time is an important factor during exam preparation!

CSIR NET REVISION TOOLS

Number 8: Learn from the diagrams: It’s easy and time-saving to understand the molecular mechanisms or techniques’ procedures through the diagrams or flowcharts. The description given below them is compressed, summarized, and in bulleted points format, easy to understand and memorize. Next time, Whenever you study the standard books, pick the diagrams, flowcharts, and tables first.

Number 9: Solve and practice – Just learning the theory might not be sufficient. It is vital to know the pattern of the questions which could be framed from any topic. Practicing the exercises provided at the back of the chapters will enable you to become familiar with the pattern of the questions asked and the analytical skills required to solve them. Most of the standard books contain solved exercises for the chapters, which works as a desirable addition. One common practice you can follow is before reading the chapter, open the concept review questions at the back first, study what kind of questions are asked, and then start reading it. That way, you will know which part of the chapter you have to focus on more,

Number 10: Seize Glossary– Glossary is your best friend while revising from a standard reference book. You get all the important terms, abbreviations, and definitions enlisted at a single place in alphabetical order. This can enrich your knowledge and work as a quick way of revising the contents studied in the book.  So, do not miss out on looking at the glossary provided at the standard books’ end. This part of the book is as powerful as a Flash Card Revision technique.

Number 11: Feast on Book Index – Feeling lost with any term or chemical formula, the index is the savior. Search for your word of choice in the index, where names of chemical compounds, definitions of specialized terms, and variants of basic names that might have been omitted from the glossary will be available. You may also locate the terms that are not in the glossary by referring to the index with page numbers. 99% of Students end up ignoring Glossary and Index, but you must not. These are the 2 easy weapons for faster & better understanding from a Standard book.

Number 12: Avoid referring to multiple books– Do your research, conclude, and select one or two standard books against various subjects like molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or immunology. Refer them throughout the preparations. Do not spend much time reading and comparing the topics from different books, leading to confusion and inadequate productivity. We have included the link to unit-wise Standard books for CSIR NET, GATE, and DBT BET exam for your help. Kindly check it out. The link is given in the description.

Number 13: Mix it with the Internet resources – While studying, you will get doubts or need clarity on the topics you are studying. In that case, you can always refer to the Book Author’s verified websites to refer to the web resources that come along with the book. One word of caution here is: Do not randomly go on youtube and start watching random people’s lectures. The depth of knowledge required for these competitive exams is very high, and most youtube videos lack that depth.
