NAL Bengaluru Develop “SwasthVayu”

The CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru has developed “SwasthVayu”, a BiPAP Non-Invasive Ventilator for COVID-19 patients in just 36 days.

To treat COVID-19 patients, in a record time of 36 days, the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) Bangalore, has developed a Non-Invasive BiPAP Ventilator.

BiPAP Non-Invasive ventilator has a built-in biocompatible “3D printed manifold & coupler” with HEPA filter (Highly Efficient Particulate Air Filter) and is a microcontroller-based precise closed-loop adaptive control system. The fear of the virus spreading is alleviated by these unique features. It has features like Timed, CPAP, Spontaneous, AUTO BIPAP modes with provision to externally connect Enrichment unit or an Oxygen concentrator. The system has undergone stringent biomedical tests and NABL accredited agencies have certified the system for safety and performance.

This can be used without any specialized nursing, and is compact, cost-effective, and configured with the majority of indigenous components, thus the major advantage of this machine is that it is simple to use. In the current Indian COVID 19 scenario, this makes it ideal for treating COVID-19 patients in dispensaries, home, Makeshift Hospitals, and Wards. CSIR-NAL is expected to get approval from the regulatory authorities shortly and is in the

process of taking it forward with the regulatory authorities. As a partner for mass production, CSIR-NAL has already begun discussions with major public/private industries.

The CSIR NAL team was complemented by Dr. Shekhar C Mande, DG CSIR. Based on its expertise in the aerospace design domain, this team has enabled a spin-off technology. One of the achievements by CSIR-NAL, the flight of indigenously developed Hansa-3, on May 11th in 1998, that is also celebrated on National Technology Day, was recalled by Dr. Shekhar C Mande.

Shri Jitendra J. Jadhav, Director CSIR-NAL stated that CSIR-NAL developed BIPAP Non-Invasive Ventilator with an externally connected Oxygen concentrator, based on global experience and specific inputs from pulmonologists in India and abroad. For COVID-19 patients who do not require intubation and invasive ventilation and those who are in moderate to mid-stage severe, this will be an ideal treatment.

The team consisted of technocrats and medical practitioners under the leadership of the Head Electronics Dept., Dr. CM Ananda; Chief Medical Officer- NAL, Dr.Amarnarayan D; Respiratory Physiologist CSIR-IGIB, Dr. Viren Sardana and a team of scientists at NAL.
