1] Regular PhD programme of IASST:

The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati is an autonomous R&D Institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The Institute is engaged in frontier areas of research in the specific domain of Physical, Chemical, Mathematical and Biological Sciences. The Institute’s aim is to contribute to basic sciences and develop technology using local resources through strong interdisciplinary research approach across different divisions. Institute is equipped with modern and sophisticated instrumentation including SEM, XRD, LCMS-MS, AFM, DNA Sequencer and computational facility for cutting edge scientific research. Ph.D. program of IASST is affiliated to Gauhati University, Cotton University and Deakin University.

The Institute invites applications against the following vacancies for admission into the Ph.D. program for the year 2017-18.

Area of Research : Traditional Knowledge based Drug Development and Delivery

Basic Qualification : M.Sc. Biochemistry/Zoology (Cell Biology)/M.Pharm

Eligibility:

Candidates shall be eligible to apply for admission and registration within the

ongoing program of research at IASST leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), if he/she has obtained 55% marks in aggregate (Equivalent CGPA in 10 point scale) in the master’s degree examination. A candidate belonging to SC/ST who has obtained 50% marks in aggregate in master degree examination shall also be eligible to apply.

Fellowship/Financial support for regular PhD programme of IASST:

Selected candidates will be required to join the Ph.D. program of IASST within a week’s time from the date of announcement of result. The selected candidates shall be eligible for a monthly stipend and annual contingency as per the recent circular of DST, Govt. of India on fellowship for PhD. Subject to availability, selected candidates will be provided single room, well-furnished accommodation in the Dorothy Hodgkin Student and Scientists Home as per the Institute’s rule. [2] PhD under IASST-Deakin fellowship programme:

Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati and Deakin University, Australia had signed a MoU for collaborative research to be carried out at both the Institutes. This collaboration includes PhD research in advanced field of science under joint supervision of a Principal Supervisor at Deakin University and a Scientist of IASST on a selected theme and degree will be offered by the Deakin University, Australia. This year the theme of research has been identified to be “Traditional Knowledge based Drug Development and Delivery”.

Research Topic: Development of standardized and chemically characterized phyto-pharmaceuticals/ herbal formulations to treat metabolic syndrome

Applications are invited from eligible candidate for carrying out PhD research on the above topic. The research fellow will be enrolled at Deakin University under the In Country PhD program with joint supervision provided from IASST and Deakin University, Australia. Selected research fellows will get to spend six months of their time at Deakin University and rest of the duration the researcher will be based in laboratories at IASST, Guwahati.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • M.Sc. Biochemistry/Zoology (Cell Biology)/M.Pharm
  • 65% and above in Graduation and Post-Graduation
  • Research publications and NET qualification preferred
  • Mandatory English Language Score required (If IELTS, overall IELTS score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5 for Faculty of Health at Deakin)

The candidate has to submit a brief write up on the above topic in which he /she is willing to carry out PhD work narrating how the program will benefit him/her as well as both the Nations. The write-up is expected to reflect creative ability and critical research thoughts and shortlisted candidates will have to reflect thorough knowledge on the write-up during interaction with the final selection committee. A written test may also be conducted to shortlist the selected candidates. Experts from both Deakin University and IASST will be involved in the selection process.

Remuneration: Remuneration for the period of research in Australia will be governed as per the norms of Deakin India Research Initiative (DIRI) program of Deakin University and for the remaining period as per the norms that guides research fellowship of DST, Govt. of India

Application Procedure:

Application should be filled up online or in case of difficulty, in the format available here. The candidate can print the form on A4-size plain paper, fill-up, scan and send by email to [email protected]. Each page of the application form should be signed by the candidate. The candidate should write the serial number and area of research as listed above, for which he/she is applying on the application form.

Applications should be accompanied by self-attested copies of certificates and mark sheets. The candidate must provide their mobile/phone number and correct e-mail address as most of the correspondence will be done through these channels. Incomplete applications and those received after the closing date will not be entertained. The decisions of the admission committee will be final and binding and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard. Results of written test and interview will be available in IASST website and all correspondence must be done through the email [email protected]. The online form has to be filled in or the scanned copy emailed within 30 days of publication of this advertisement in the newspaper.

No application fee will be charged by the Institute.

Selection Procedure: List of applicants selected to appear in the entrance test will be uploaded in the IASST website. The expected dates of Entrance test followed by the interview will be displayed in website/communicated to candidates selected for entrance test.

Entrance Test:

A written test will be conducted for the applicants and the short listed candidates will have to appear interview subsequently. The entrance test will be conducted using questions set by renowned expert/professor/scientist in the discipline concerned. There will be multiple choice questions and questions of descriptive nature to test creative ability required for asking research questions and designing experiments for answer. It will be of 1 hour and 15 minutes duration. Successful candidates in the written test will write an essay of 10 sentences on the area of research of his/her choice before the interview starts and submit to the expert panel constituted for final selection.

Candidates who hold fellowship from different funding agencies after clearing CSIR-UGC-NET/DBT-JRF/ICMR-JRF/ICAR-JRF examination need not appear for the written test but have to appear in the interview for final selection. These candidates shall also express their research interest in the form of an essay of 10 sentences on the topic of their choice within the broad research programmes of IASST.
