The Indo-Japan Centre for Advanced Biomedical Research, also called the DBT-AIST International Laboratory for Advanced Biomedicine (DAILAB) was inaugurated recently at the School of Life Sciences, a constituent of Manipal University.

The centre aims at promoting research, training and education in the field of traditional medicine using modern biotechnology techniques. The centre was coming up following collaboration between Manipal University and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan. The centre is supported by the Department of Biotechnology of the Union Ministry.

The setting up of the centre will help in having Ph.D programmes as well as student exchange programmes between the School of Life Sciences and the Japanese institute.

H. Vinod Bhat, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, said that the university was giving priority to establishing centres to promote inter-disciplinary studies and research.

Dr. Bhat said that the university had set a target of establishin

The purpose of these centres was to look at the lacunae existing in the university system and address those needs by promoting inter-disciplinary studies. “These centres will act as drivers for change and promote collaboration,” he said.

Yoshihiro Ohmiya, director of AIST, spoke. K. Satyamoorthy, director of SLS, welcomed the gathering. Sunil Kaul, Chief Senior Research Scientist, AIST, gave an overview of AIST. B. Ramjee, director, International Collaborations, Manipal University, was present.
