“AI tools can predict cancer risk with 90% accuracy, which can assist the oncologist in urgent medical intervention,” says Dr. Ashok Sharma, an additional professor at AIIMS’s biochemistry department. Dr. Sharma and his team, in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, developed a platform called iOncology.ai. This tool integrates clinical and imaging data to predict ovarian and breast malignancies early, enabling oncologists to craft personalized treatments.

This is not only the case in India, but global studies also validate AI’s effectiveness in cancer detection. A German study published in Nature Medicine revealed that AI-assisted screenings improved breast cancer detection rates by 17.6%.
In India, specialized breast cancer units at Apollo Hospitals use AI to scan mammograms and analyze biopsy samples, delivering faster and more reliable diagnoses. “This technology automates the detection of cancerous cells, quickening turnaround times and improving diagnostics,” says Dr. Nita Nair, lead consultant in breast surgery.

Accessible cancer care

Access to quality cancer care has always been a challenge for many people in remote or underserved areas. AI is breaking down these barriers. Mobile mammography units equipped with AI tools have screened thousands of women in rural villages, with digital images sent to experts in urban centers. This means that even those far from hospitals can get the care they need.

Dr. Nita Nair further adds, “AI-driven tools can facilitate remote screenings and second opinions in underserved areas where radiologists and oncologists are scarce. Our AI-powered mobile mammography units have already made a significant impact in rural communities.”

In Punjab, a project using AI-based Thermalytix units screened over 12,000 women for breast cancer. According to Dr. Sewanti Limaye, director of medical precision oncology at Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, “Tools like Thermalytix, which use thermography and AI algorithms, show promising results in breast cancer detection, especially in dense breast tissue. Combining AI tools with traditional methods enhances diagnostic reliability.”

Smarter, Precise Treatments and Unlocking Genetic Clues

At Talegaon’s TGH Onco Life Cancer Center, doctors are using the Radixact System, integrated with AI-powered motion technology, to deliver radiation therapy with pinpoint accuracy. “The advanced system identifies the tumor’s exact location and adapts in real time to patient movements, ensuring accurate radiation delivery without additional stress,” says Dr. Prashant Chandra, a surgical oncologist. This system has already been used successfully to treat lung, liver, and prostate cancers.

Genetic risks linked to cancer are also being predicted using AI. A consultant in molecular pathology, Dr. Amrit Kaur Kaler, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital used AI-guided genetic testing to uncover a rare mutation in a patient’s POLE gene—a mutation tied to hereditary colorectal and endometrial cancers. She says, “Thanks to this discovery, the patient avoided aggressive treatment and is now under careful monitoring.” Cases like this highlight the potential of AI in advancing personalized medicine.
