Project description (Dinitrogen Fixation in the Indian Ocean):

Biological dinitrogen (N2) fixation by specialized prokaryotes is the main contributor to reactive nitrogen stocks in the ocean, fueling the marine food chain as well as promoting CO2 sequestration. As compared to other oceanic basins, the magnitude as well as controls of N2 fixation in the Indian Ocean remain unknown as well as excluded from global ocean nitrogen budgets. The goal of this

project is to decipher the role of N2 fixation in the two main sub-basins of the Indian Ocean (the Arabian Sea and also the Bay of Bengal), focusing on the two most important seasons: winter monsoon and also summer monsoon. We will certainly examine the role of monsoon on the magnitude of N2 fixation rates.

Essential Qualification: M.Sc. in Microbiology or equal.

Desirable Qualification: Experience in microbial oceanography related instruments.
