Advanced Virology Lab for COVID-19 Testing Established

An “Advanced Virology Lab” for testing COVID-19, a Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 3 level facility has been established by the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow.

Based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR), this facility has been developed.

The Senior Principal Scientist, NBRI, Dr. Samir Sawant said, “Depending upon the pathogen a facility deals with, the biosafety levels are assigned to it accordingly. This facility is an advanced version as for COVID-19 BSL2 level facility is recommended, according to ICMR guidelines. Any aerosol present is sucked and passed through filters in this advanced version with a suction facility, a “Negative Pressure”. It makes it a safe COVID-19 testing facility as it can filter viruses or bacteria. The chances of infections at culturing facilities are reduced here.”

The facility will add to Uttar Pradesh’s testing capacity, said the Director, NBRI, Prof. S K Barik. About 20,000 samples per day are being tested in the UP at present.

Dr. Sawant said, “In the first week, we will start testing 100 samples a day to follow

the protocol and then increase it to 500 samples a day later.”

Prof Barik said, “As a service to the people of Uttar Pradesh in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, NBRI took up the initiative for developing the testing facility in Uttar Pradesh, as requested by the higher authorities of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (DG-CSIR).” He added saying that the NBRI team for the testing of COVID samples will include a team of researchers and scientists from the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow.”
