Our International PhD Scholar Initiative enables outstanding international students to join our Medical Biology PhD Program.
The International PhD Scholar Initiative selects students on the basis of their academic record, relevant experience and a videoconference interview. Successful applicants will then be connected with prospective supervisors to select a PhD project in the student’s field of interest.

International PhD scholarships
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute offers a number of dedicated scholarships to support International PhD Scholars. PhD scholarships are also available from the University of Melbourne, philanthropic organisations and government bodies.
The Institute’s International PhD Scholarships provide a living allowance equivalent to the current Melbourne Research Scholarship rate. In addition, all PhD students receive the Institute’s $2000 per annum scholarship top-up plus a relocation allowance, health insurance coverage, and tuition fee offset.

PhD students are encouraged to broaden their understanding of medical research by attending seminars within their own and other research divisions, as well as weekly Institute seminars and seminars at our research neighbours in the Parkville precinct.
How to Apply:
To apply for the International PhD Scholar Initiative:
- Check that you meet the academic entry requirements for PhD study at the University of Melbourne. Please note you do not need to apply to the University of Melbourne at the time of application for the International PhD Scholar Initiative.
- Investigate the current student project opportunities to identify your preferred research areas
- Submit an online application form
You will be asked to indicate up to five titles of research projects or Institute supervisors who are in your field of interest - Email the following application supporting documents to [email protected]
Subject line: 2017 IPSI Application – YOURSURNAME
i) A cover letter that explains your research interests and motivation for doing a PhD
ii) Curriculum vitae
iii) Academic transcripts (include university grading scale and English translation, if applicable)
Application deadline: 1 December 2017
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in January 2018 and invited to a videoconference interview between 29 January and 9 February 2018.
Institute International PhD Scholarships will be awarded to the successful students by the end of February 2018. The Scientific Education Office will assist the student with locating a supervisor, selecting a project and applying for University of Melbourne PhD candidature. Please note you do not need to apply to the University of Melbourne at the time of application for the International PhD Scholar Initiative.
All international students need to consider Australian student visa requirements as part of their application. For students with a confirmed laboratory placement, our People and Culture team can assist in visa arrangements.
