Did you know, India imports over 80% its high end medical device requirement, a considerable 10-20% higher than the import percentage of other devices?

Now, NIPER (the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research), which has worked with  Johnson & Johnson and Sahajanand Laser Technologies earlier this year in order to develop skilled, industry-oriented manpower in the medical devices sector of the country, is planning to team up with two Indian companies- Biotech Visioncare and Matrix Meditec Pvt Ltd.

The objective of this collaboration is research and development in Intraocular Lenses and Orthopaedic implants; this would be an important event in the direction of reduction of high-end medical devices import in the country and additionally be of value to the post-graduation in medical devices course at the NIPER, Ahmedabad.

Another boost to this movement comes through the Government’s decision to expand the NIPER across the country which will in turn lay the foundation for the development of domestic industry.

Owing to the Country’s Department of Pharmaceutical’s effort to bring together the NIPER and the industry, a total of 17 MoUs (memorandum of understanding) is being signed between the NIPERs and the Pharma industry regarding academia-industry linkage, which is an extremely

important factor when it comes to building a skilled ecosystem for medical devices industry.

This association is expected to bring together education and R&D, and further helping to build a skilled ecosystem.
