Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) is an autonomous national institute under Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India). This futuristic innovation institute of its own kind in the country has a mission of advancing knowledge, leads and emerging technologies/processes relevant to agri-food sector towards applications and products. It aims to link them with societal benefits through catalysing/promoting entrepreneurial action around bioprocesses, bio-products, value-addition to bioproducts etc. with special reference to the agrifood sector. Currently, the four major mandated R&D areas in hand at the institute are (A) Value Addition to Primary Processing Residues/ Wastes for Edible Products; (B) Valorisation of Crop Waste for Speciality Products and Chemicals; (C) Nutritionals, nutraceuticals and upgradation of value or use of bio-products, (D) Biosynthetic technology/synthetic biology for low volume-high value products and industrial enzymes. To support and steer this mission, the institute requires following temporary research positions on stipendary / fellowship / associateship basis:
(A) JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWS (WITH OWN FELLOWSHIP)
1. Junior Research Fellow (Catalysis Chemistry) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications : M.Sc. in Chemistry (Organic / Inorganic / Physical) from a recognized University / Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies.
2. Junior Research Fellow – (Natural Product Chemistry) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications: M.Sc. in Chemistry (Medicinal / Pharmaceutical / Organic / Inorganic / Physical) from a recognized University / Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies.
3. Junior Research Fellow – (Biotechnology) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Science (Biology / Biotechnology / Biochemistry / Bioinformatics / Microbiology) from a recognized University / Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies. Those appearing in the final year of Master’s examination and have been conferred fellowship from any of the above mentioned agencies, may also be considered. However, if selected, they will be required to provide proof of degree completion
(provisional/original).
4. Junior Research Fellow – (Chemical / Biochemical Engineering) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications: B.Tech / B.E. / M.Tech / M.E. (Biotechnology / Biochemical Engineering / Bioengineering / Chemical Engineering / Chemical Technology / Bioprocess Engineering) from a recognized University / Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies.
5. Junior Research Fellow – (Chemical / Nano Sciences) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications: M. Sc. in Chemical or Life Sciences, M. Pharm. / M. S. (Pharm.) / M. Tech. in Medicinal Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Science from a recognized University / Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies.
6. Junior Research Fellow – (Chemical Technology / Food Biotechnology) – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – As per fellowship awarding agency
Qualifications: M. Tech. in Chemical/Food/Biotech Engineering or M. Sc. in Biochemistry/Food Science from a recognized University/Institute and having their own fellowship granted by CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST/ICAR/ICMR or other funding agencies.
Note: Those appearing in the final year of Master’s examination and have been conferred fellowship from any of the above mentioned agencies, may also be considered. However, if selected, they will be required to provide proof of degree completion (provisional/original) and Fellowship Award Certificate before joining.
(B) FELLOWSHIPS UNDER EXTERNALLY FUNDED PROJECTS AT CIAB, MOHALI
2. Junior Research Fellow (Synthetic Biology/Biosynthetic Technology) – One position
Project Title – “Protein engineering and gene mining strategies for the development of thermo-acidic D-psicose 3-epimerase, useful in generating functional products”.
Funded By – Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) under ECRA scheme of DST (Govt. of India).
Principal Investigator – Dr. Sudhir Pratap Singh, Scientist-C, CIAB, Mohali
Duration of the project – Three Years
Age limit – 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 25,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Qualifications – Master’s Degree in Science in the area of Life sciences
(Biology/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology) from a government recognized institute / university with NET / GATE / any other relevant equivalent nature of test qualified.
Tenure – Initially one year, renewable for the consecutive years based on satisfactory performance but in no case beyond three years or cessation of operation of the project whichever is earlier.
3. Junior Research Fellow (Chemical / Nano Sciences) – One position
Project Title – “Engineering Photosynthetic Nanopigments for Efficient Valorization of Lignocellulosic Biomass”.
Funded By – Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) under ECRA scheme of DST (Govt. of India).
Principal Investigator – Dr. Jayeeta Bhaumik, Scientist-D
Duration of the project – Three Years
Age limit – 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 25,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Qualifications –
(i) M.Sc. in Chemical or Life Sciences from a recognized institute / university and having NET / GATE / any other relevant equivalent nature of test qualified. OR
(ii) M. Pharm. / M.S. (Pharm.) / M.Tech. in Medicinal Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Science/Chemical Engineering from a recognized institute / university.
Tenure – Initially one year, renewable for the consecutive years based on satisfactory performance but in no case beyond three years or cessation of operation and/or funding of the project by the project funding agency, whichever is earlier.
4. Junior Research Fellow (Biological Sciences) – Two positions
Project Title – “Structural and functional characterization of metagenome of extreme niches and fermented foods of high altitude region of Sikkim Himalaya”.
Funded By – IBSD, DBT (Govt. of India).
Principal Investigators – Dr. Sudhir P. Singh and Dr. Sudesh Kumar
Duration of the project – Two Years
Age limit – 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 25,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Qualifications –
(i) M. Sc. in Life sciences (Biology/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology) from a recognized university/institute with NET / GATE / any other relevant equivalent nature of test qualified. OR
(ii) M. Tech. (Biotechnology) from a recognized university/institute.
Tenure – Initially one year, renewable for the second year based on satisfactory performance but in no case beyond two years or cessation of operation and/or funding of the project by the project funding agency, whichever is earlier.
(C) FELLOWSHIPS UNDER FORTHCOMING INDUSTRY PROJECTS AT CIAB, MOHALI
1. Junior Research Fellow (Life Science/ Chemical / Nano Sciences) – Multiple positions
Age limit – 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 25,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Qualifications – M. Sc. in Chemical or Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, M. Pharm. / M. S. (Pharm.) / M. Tech. in Medicinal Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Science from a recognized University / Institute.
Desirable – Candidates with deep knowledge and/or research experience in nanotechnology, enzyme immobilization, and enzyme kinetics will be given preference in case of equal performance at interview.
Tenure – Variable, initially not more than one year, extendable (post-evaluation) for variable period based on satisfactory performance but in no case beyond availability of industry funds for the fellowship or after the core project activity or its ancillary activities, whichever is earlier.
2. Research Associate (Life Science/ Chemical / Nano Sciences) – Multiple positions
Age limit – 35 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 36,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Qualifications – PhD in Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Science from a recognized University / Institute.
Desirable – Candidates with deep knowledge and/or research experience in nanotechnology, enzyme immobilization, and enzyme kinetics will be given preference in case of equal performance at interview.
Tenure – Variable, initially not more than one year, extendable (post-evaluation) for variable period based on satisfactory performance but in no case beyond availability of industry funds for the fellowship or after the core project activity or its ancillary activities, whichever is earlier.
(D) FELLOWSHIPS FUNDED BY CIAB FOR INTERNAL R&D PROJECTS/ACTIVITIES
1. Project Fellow I – Multiple position
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 16,000/- per month
(a) Tenure: One Year, extendable (post-evaluation) for second year subject to satisfactory progress, institutional needs and financial provisions.
(b) Qualifications:
(i) M. Sc. in Chemistry (Medicinal/Pharmaceutical/Organic/Inorganic/Physical) from a recognized University / Institute
(ii) Having knowledge / experience on isolation and modification of natural products would be desired, in case of equivalent performance at the interview.
2. Project Fellow II – Multiple position
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 18,000/- per month
(a) Tenure: One Year, extendable (post-evaluation) for second year subject to satisfactory progress, institutional needs and financial provisions.
(b) Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Chemistry / Life sciences (Biology/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology) from a recognized university/institute with at least two years of relevant research experience
3. Junior Research Fellow – CIAB – Multiple positions
Age limit– 28 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 25,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Tenure : One Year, extendable (post-evaluation) for second year subject to satisfactory progress, institutional needs and financial provisions.
Qualifications:
(i) M. Sc. in Life sciences (Biology/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology) from a recognized
university/institute with NET / GATE / any other relevant equivalent nature of test qualified. OR
(ii) M. Tech. (Biotechnology) from a recognized university/institute
4. Research Associate – CIAB – Multiple positions
Age limit – 35 Years
Fellowship – Rs. 36,000/- + HRA as per DST norms
Tenure : One Year, extendable (post-evaluation) for second year subject to satisfactory progress, institutional needs and financial provisions.
Qualifications:
(i) Ph.D.# (Biotechnology/Biosciences/Life Sciences) with dissertation in the area of molecular biology /recombinant enzymes or M.Tech. (Biotechnology) with three years of research experience in the area of molecular biology /recombinant enzymes and
(ii) having at least one research paper in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) journal.
Assignment: To carry out research related to recombinant enzymes, catalysis kinetics, site directed mutagenesis, protein secretion etc.
# The candidates who have submitted Ph.D thesis will also be eligible for the position of Research Associate but they would be treated as and paid equivalent to Senior Research Fellow (i.e. Rs. 28000/- + HRA) till successful completion of Ph. D thesis viva.
Application Procedure
The interested candidates may appear for a Walk-In-Interview on 18-05-2017 along with the application form (as per format for JRF/Project Fellow) available on the website www.ciab.res.in. The duly filled application form must be submitted at the time of the registration from 09:00 AM to 10:30 AM on 18-05-2017. The candidates must ascertain their eligibility before applying, as ineligible candidates would not be interviewed.
Process of Engagement
The eligible applicants would be interviewed by a duly constituted committee. The committee would recommend the candidates, if found suitable, for consideration of the competent authority for engagement on purely on Fellowship/Stipendiary basis for a period of one year. The CIAB may consider (based on performance review of the candidate, should CIAB requires and the candidate intends) to extend the incumbent’s working for the second year. During the engagement period, the fellowship/scholarship may be discontinued by the institute at any time with one months’ notice or one month’s emoluments in lieu. Subject to satisfactory performance and R&D outputs, NET qualified research fellows may be allowed to continue as SRF after 2 years of Junior Research Fellowship. Provisions of registration for Ph.D exist at Universities having MoU with CIAB subject to scholar’s tangible performance, promise, academic suitability, etc.

Important
• The applications should be submitted in the prescribed format that can be downloaded from the CIAB website: www.ciab.res.in.
• Completed applications along with photocopies of all the relevant educational and experience certificates are to be submitted at the time of registration at Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), Sector-81 (Knowledge City), Manauli P.O., S.A.S. Nagar, Mohali – 140306, Punjab from 09:00 AM to 10:30 AM on 18-05-2017 (guide map enclosed below).
• All the positions are based at Mohali, Punjab but some works may be assigned to be carried out at outstations also.
• Number of positions may vary.
• Relaxation of age shall be as per Government of India Rules.
• If in any area no suitable candidate is found, no selection would be made in that case.
• No TA/DA etc. would be paid for attending the walk-in-interview.
• Candidates should bring their original documents for verification and one set of photocopy (for submission) of their all relevant certificates related to education, experience, publications, thesis/dissertations etc. at the time of interview.
• Candidates found eligible after scrutiny of applications post registration, shall be required to appear before a Selection Committee. Kindly note that in case there are substantial number of applicants, the Chief Executive Officer, CIAB reserves the right to devise such criteria as deemed fit to shortlist the candidates for the interview. If required, a written test may also be conducted to short-list candidates. The decision of the CEO, CIAB to conduct a written test shall be final and binding on all in this respect.
