Government of Telangana releases Rs. 518 cr for government hospitals

The Medical and Health Department of Telangana has released Rs 518.29 crore as part of its efforts to take the treatment being extended in government hospitals to that of corporate level.

Disclosing this to media, Medical and Health Minister Dr Lakshma Reddy said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao released Rs 330 crore for drugs and disposables used in diagnostic tests and post-operative medical care in Vaidya Vidhana Parishad hospitals. Rs 144 crore has been released to teaching hospitals under the control of the Director of Medical Education.

To the one and only cancer hospital in public sector MNJ Hospital the government released Rs 31.29 crore for construction of additional blocks. The government is contemplating to develop it as the state-level cancer centre.

Laxma Reddy told reporters that the government was determined to develop healthcare services to be on a par with those provided in private and corporate hospitals and this announcement was just one step towards that direction.

“With not just the treatment but also diagnosis in such cases as with cancer can be very expensive, the government has decided to launch on an experimental basis, a Rs 10-crore life-saving medicine system that will also include a provision for monthly supply of all required drugs, especially those that are expensive and out of reach of the patients in government hospitals,” the minister said.

The Chief Minister had allocated Rs 3 crore for baby kits meant for neonatal babies. Women who undergo deliveries in government maternity hospitals are eligible to receive the kits. The scheme to distribute the kits will be launched in a month.

Laxma Reddy said that following the implementation of the ambulance service to drop a newborn and the mother home, the government will, from next month, start distributing baby kits for every child delivered at a government hospital. Each kit will include diapers, baby soap and oil and baby powder among other goodies, he added.
