Kerela Biotechnology Re-Entry Fellowship ( KBIREF )
Objective :
The aim of this senior level fellowship programme is to attract well-trained and highly skilled researchers with good track record of research (Indian nationals) working abroad in various frontier areas in biotechnology (biomedical sciences, agriculture, veterinary science, bioengineering, energy, environment, bioinformatics and other related areas), by providing them an attractive opportunity to pursue research and development in biotechnology in research and academic institutions in Kerala. It is expected to provide services of highly skilled researchers to augment the scientific manpower in academic and research Institutions in Kerala.
Eligibility :
The applicant should possess a Ph.D., MD. or equivalent degree and at least three years of post-doctoral research experience in premier research laboratories abroad with an outstanding track record of research in biotechnology related areas as reflected in publications and other recognitions.
Only candidates (Indian nationals) working overseas and are below 45 years of age are eligible. Those who have already returned to India and are currently working in India are not eligible.
Number of Fellowships : Up to five fellowships will be awarded every year.
Details of the Award :
Kerala Biotechnology Re–entry Fellowship is a senior fellowship programme, and the awardees are to be considered commensurate with the experience at par with the faculty/scientists at the host institute. They are entitled to take up teaching/research assignments in the host Institution and supervising Doctoral/MSc students.
- Each K-BiREF Fellow will be entitled to a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 75,000/ with an annual increase of 3%; in addition, each fellow is entitled to 10% House Rent Allowance per month. In case where host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, no house rent allowance is admissible Annual research /contingency grant of Rs 7.5 lakhs each for first and second year and Rs 5.0 lakhs each for the subsequent 3 years will be paid for purchase of consumables ,reagents, minor equipments , and engaging manpower, to meet travel expenses and other contingent expenditure to be incurred to carry out the proposed research.
- Host Institution may provide medical benefits, transport allowance, and other benefits as per their prevailing norms as applicable to their employees of the equivalent rank out of their own resources/ funds.
- Fellows retain an option for drawing either the fellowship or salary if they are appointed at a suitable permanent scientific position. Fellows opting for salary can continue to avail the research /contingency grant with prior approval of the KBC.
- K-BiREF Fellows could take up fellowship at any of the scientific institutes/ universities in the State of Kerala. However, application should be duly forwarded by the competent authority of the host Institute.
- Awardees are eligible to apply for research grants to any of the funding agencies towards accomplishment of research proposal. However, the Co-PI has to be a permanent employee of the host institution.
Tenure of fellowship : Fellows can draw fellowship for a term of five years. Fellowship is further extendable for another term on fresh evaluation of performance of the fellow.
How to Apply :
Eligible candidates may submit the application in the prescribed proforma and duly forwarded by the competent authority to the Advisor, Kerala Biotechnology Commission, KSCSTE, Sasthra Bhavan, Pattom Trivandrum – 4. Detailed bio-data, list of publications, reprints of top five publications, research proposal, letters of recommendation (academic)/ names of at least three referees, and letter of consent from the Head of the host Institute shall be submitted along with the application.
Mode of Selection :
Applications will be screened by an expert committee consisting of experts nominated by the Commission. Short listed candidates will have to appear for an interview /presentation which can be either in person or through skype or similar tele-mode. Selected candidates have to execute an agreement accepting the terms and conditions of the Award and must join the Host Institution within three months’ time.
The last date of receiving the applications is on or before July 15,2016.
