Admission to Ph.D. Programme 2016-2017 @ Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI)

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow is a tertiary-care, superspecialty medical institute involved in patient care, teaching and research. It has excellent research facilities and runs PhD programs in several clinical and non-clinical disciplines.

The institute invites applications for admission to Ph.D. program for the year 2016-2017.

Persons with a postgraduate degree in a science subject and fulfilling one of the following criteria may apply:

  • Have a letter of award for JRF/research fellowship (with funding for at least 3 years) from a government funding agency.
  • Cleared a national-level examination conducted by a government agency, but without own fellowship (e.g. CSIR/UGC-LS) and employed as SRF, JRF or Research Assistant in an extramural project funded by a government/UN agency at SGPGI of at least 3-year duration (beginning less than 6 months before the last date of submission of application).
  • Have a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) at this Institute from a government funding agency and is within the first six months of the fellowship at the time of last date for the submission of application.

Some of the potential areas of research include:

  • Laboratory and epidemiologic aspects of viral hepatitis, in particular pathogenesis and immunologic aspects of hepatitis E virus infection / Genetic basis of inherited diseases affecting the liver and gastrointestinal tract (R Aggarwal, Gastroenterology).
  • Molecular Genetics & Diagnostics, for monogenic & Polygenic Disorder (Sarita Agarwal, Medical Genetics)
  • Synthesis/bio-evaluation of radio-labeled tracers for PET/SPECT studies (Manish Dixit, Nuclear Medicine).
  • Stem cell biology research including: therapeutic potentials of different types of stem cell (mesenchymal stem cells, amniotic stem cells, multipotent progenitor cells, fetal kidney stem cells); Biology of acute leukemias and aplastic anemia (S Nityanand, Hematology)
