Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati’s campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.

Applications are invited for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme starting in July 2016. The departments/centres and areas in which these programme will be offered are:

Departments/Centres and Areas:

Dept. of Biosciences and Bioengineering-All areas of Biosciences and Bioengineering/Biotechnology

Dept. of Chemistry-Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry.

Centre for the Environment– Environmental Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Economics

/ Engineering; Waste Water Treatment and supply; Solid Waste Management; CO2 Capture/storage; Atmospheric Chemistry; Air Quality monitoring; Environmental Hydraulics; Environmental Genomics; Environmental aspects of Algal Biotechnology;  and Other emerging areas of environment with interdisciplinary application of science, technology, arts and humanities.

Centre for Nanotechnology-Experimental and Computational studies of micro- and nano-fluidics; Nano Electronics and Optics; Nanomaterials; Nanobiotechnology; Nano Devices and Applications; Polymer Synthesis and Optoelectronic Applications.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme:

Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:

PhD in Engineering:

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following  criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0,  from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/technical-education-1
  • A candidate having a Two-year Master’s degree (after completion of 4-year Bachelor’s degree) or three-year Master’s degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree) in Engineering/ Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks Or A candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.
  • A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree
  • A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.

 PhD in Science:

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science  from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science (from other than IITs/IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of  marks.

For PhD in Centre for the Environment, Centre for Energy, and Centre for Nanotechnology 

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions.  Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/technical-education-1
  • Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

Relaxation for SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PwD  applicants.

Assistantship: Institute assistantships will be available to eligible PhD students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI/UGC) norms, as applicable from time to time. The present rates of assistantships are as below:

  • Junior Research Fellow(JRF): 1st & 2nd Year –  Rs.25,000/- p.m.
  • Senior Research Fellow(SRF): 3rd to 5th Year – Rs.28,000/- p.m.

How To Apply:

  • Please get a print-out of the `Guideline for Filling-up Online PhD Application Form’, by visiting the concerned website (https://auto.iitg.ernet.in/phd/downloads/guideline_phd.pdf)
  • For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following documents (including scanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading).
  1. A scanned soft copy of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg or jpg or gif only, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your coloured photograph is mandatory. If a scanned copy of your coloured photograph is not uploaded, your on-line application may be rejected.
  2. A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);
  3. If applicable, a scanned soft copy of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL) Certificate as per format prescribed below)], in image format like jpeg or jpg or gif only, of size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that OBC (NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or after 01-04-2015.
  4. If applicable, attested copy of your `PwD’ Certificate.
  5. If applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [ i.e. Sponsored (Full-Time)/ IITG’s Project Staff/ Part-Time/ External (Sponsored) etc.] – as per format prescribed below.
  6. Scanned soft Copy of (a) Pass Certificate (Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that, if called for Written Test and/or Interview, the candidate will have to produce the Originals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from Class X onwards). This is also applicable for the result awaited candidates, except that along with other required documents they will produce Original as well as attested copies of all Mark Sheets up to the previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree.
  7. if applicable, Original Score Card/Certificate relating to your GATE/CEED/ NET/INSPIRE etc.*
  8. if applicable, attested copy of Certificates relating to your  professional experience etc.
  9. Demand Draft: Demand Draft is NOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test and/or Interview.

In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called** to appear in Written Test and/or Interview, only then he/she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PwD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.

NOTE:   * If you are yet to receive the original GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE Score Card/ Certificate, at least get the downloaded version of the same  from the concerned website.

**  Instead of waiting to receive the call letter, you may keep on visiting and seeing updates in the website of the department/centre in which you are applying for admission.

  • Please:
  1. enter in to the zone of Online Application Form by visiting the concerned website given below; and
  2. fill-up the Online Application Form [by going through  the `Guideline for Filling-up Online PhD Application Form’ ] and submit ( i.e. execution of `Final Submit’ function);
  3. Upload your photo and other relevant documents as explained above.
  • Please:
  1. take a print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and
  2. also keep a copy of your Filled-up Online Application Form saved in your computer or a CD or a Pen Drive (if the computer does not belong to you) for your future reference.
  • After getting the print-out of your Online Application Form, you may put your signature with date on the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form.
  • Further, If you are intending to Apply for Admission to PhD programmes of more than one department/ centre , you will be required to follow the entire process completely separately for each of the concernce departments/ centres.

NOTE: In case of any mistake, you can edit and correct contents of your online application form, up to its lats dare for submission [i.e. upto 5:00 pm pf 11th April, 2016] only.

Starting of online application process: from 10.00 a.m. of 11 March 2016 onwards.

Closing of online application process: by 5.00 p.m. of 11 April 2016.
