According to the report, the first US patient infected with coronavirus is being treated by a robot doctor in a small secured room to reduce the risk of disease spreading.
At Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington, the man infected with coronavirus is being attended by a cutting edge robot decked out with a camera, microphone, and stethoscope in the 20-by-20-foot room.
The patient in his 30s had just returned from a trip to central China and was diagnosed in Seattle. The infected patient was transported in an “isopod” from his home to the closed isolation unit in Providence Regional Medical Center on Monday.
Dr. George Diaz, chief of infectious diseases, is operating the Robo physician from outside the window of the secured isolation unit to avoid any possible contact with the disease.
Once the isolation unit was secured, the patient who is in “satisfactory condition,” was allowed to move around inside the unit.
The special pathogens unit was built in 2015 as a response to the Ebola virus. Currently, the unit has two rooms and has plans to increase the number of rooms to at least 10. The US coronavirus patient is the first to get admitted to this special unit.
The hospital team had been doing drills and training to always maintain a state of readiness, just like an earthquake or fire drill.“The wheels were greased enough that it wasn’t hard to get the process rolling to activate all the procedures that we had put in place,” Diaz said.
Jay Inslee, Washington’s governor, said on Tuesday that the state level and local health departments were prepared for such kind of situations.
Till today, the coronavirus, which is believed to have originated from the Chinese city of Wuhan has killed 26 people and infected hundreds.
WHO might declare the coronavirus outbreak in China as a public health emergency of international concern.
The risk of contracting the disease in the US is low, according to CDC officials.
