The Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy, Visakhapatnam has initiated the Summer Internship Programme (SIP) from the year 2022. The SIP is open to pre-final year students of B.E./B.Tech. and M.Sc./M.S./M.Tech. from different Indian institutions and offers an internship for 8 weeks. The SIP at the IIPE provides students a platform to explore their research potential by undertaking focused research projects with young and dynamic faculty at the IIPE. The purpose of the SIP is to motivate students to pursue their careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Definitions

• ‘Institute’ refers to the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam.
• ‘President’ refers to the President of the Board of Governors of the Institute.
• ‘Faculty’ refers to all permanent faculty members of the Institute.
• ‘SIP Interns’ refers to all applicants who were selected for the Summer Internship Programme during that particular year.

Subject Areas of Internship for Summer Internship 2025 at IIPE

One of the following subject areas must be provided by the applicant while applying for the internship:

• Biosciences/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics
• Chemical Engineering
• Chemistry
• Computer Science and Engineering
• Earth Sciences
• Electrical Engineering
• Mathematics
• Mechanical Engineering
• Petroleum Engineering

Faculty and Their Area of Expertise

Refer to the IIPE website (https://www.iipe.ac.in/allfaculty). Faculty preference may be provided by the applicant while applying for the internship. However, the faculty preference is subject to the availability of faculty during the summer vacation.

Number of Internship Positions

A maximum of two SIP Interns will be allowed under a faculty, which includes interns under Institute Funded, Project Funded, and Self-Funded categories.

Timeline of Internship

The internship will last 8 weeks during the summer vacation, as per the academic calendar of the Institute. The usual window for the summer vacation is around 2 to 2.5 months.

Cost of Internship Application

The applicants shall be required to pay an application fee of Rs. 500/- through the Payment Gateway. Application fees once paid will not be refunded.

Funding of SIP Interns

There are three categories of funding for SIP Interns:

• Funding from SIP (Institute Funded): Students working under this category will receive a consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000/- for the 8-week duration after completing the internship.
• Funding from Project (Project Funded – including Institute Research Grant and Professional Development Fund): This provides an opportunity for students to work on projects funded by faculty members of IIPE, with a maximum consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000/- for the 8-week duration after completion of the internship. For externally funded projects, funding agency guidelines will be followed.
• Self-Funded: This provides an opportunity for students to work on projects under faculty members of IIPE without receiving any stipend/funding from the IIPE.

SIP Selection Committee

The applications received by the Office of Dean (R&D) will be forwarded to Department-wise SIP Selection Committees for recommendation. Each Department-wise SIP Selection Committee consists of:

• Head of the Department (Chairperson)
• Associate Dean of R&D
• One faculty member from the concerned department/subject expert, nominated by the Dean of R&D

Selection Criteria for Summer Internship 2025 at IIPE

• Only students from the following courses (and specific semesters) are eligible:

  • B.E./B.Tech. (6th Semester)
  • M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech. (2nd Semester)
  • (Dual Degree) M.Tech. (8th Semester)
  • (Dual Degree) M.Sc. (8th Semester)
  • Note: Only regular education courses are eligible.

• The selection of applicants is based on the following criteria:

  • CGPA
  • Past research experience
  • Awards
  • Proposed work
  • Letters of recommendation

Minimum CGPA Criteria

• CGPA ≥ 7.5 for students of IITs/IISc/Institutes at par with IITs/NITs/IISERs/NISER/IIEST/CFTIs/Universities with an overall NIRF rank (latest ranking) ≤ 25.
• CGPA ≥ 8.5 for students of other institutes.
• Aggregate percentage should be more than 65% in 10th and 10+2.

Eligibility Restrictions

• Students with pending backlog and/or disciplinary action are not eligible.

Evaluation of SIP Interns During Internship

• SIP Interns must give a presentation on the work carried out in the first four weeks to an assessment committee.
• The assessment committee consists of:
  • Head of the Department (Chairperson)
  • Associate Dean of R&D
  • Mentor of the concerned SIP Intern
• The committee provides feedback and suggests possible improvements in the work.
• At the end of the internship, all SIP Interns must make a poster presentation of their work, which is open to the public.
• A commendation certificate will be awarded to interns who display research inquisitiveness and innovative thinking.

Other Guidelines

• These SIP Guidelines and any modifications shall take effect from the date of approval by the President.
• A maximum of two SIP interns will be allowed under any particular faculty of IIPE.

Distribution of SIP Interns by Funding Category

• Maximum one student per faculty can be funded under the Institute Funded Category.
• Living/hostel/transport expenses must be borne by the intern.
• The intern is not covered under the institute’s medical policy. It is advised to have a valid medical insurance policy during the internship.
• SIP is a mandatory 8-week internship programme. A commendation/completion certificate will be awarded only after completion of 8 weeks.
• Any leave/late-joining under special circumstances must be compensated by extending the internship period beyond the last date.
• Interns will be issued a temporary institute ID card to access the library, sports, computer centre, internet, and other institute and departmental research facilities.
• Interns must abide by the conduct rules of the institute. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination of the internship.

• Applications with all required documents must be submitted online through the institute website.
• Applications must be signed and stamped by the Head of Department, confirming that there is no pending backlog and/or disciplinary action against the student.

Dispute Resolution
