Fellowship Hike For JRF, SRF & RA
Dr. Chandra Srivari, the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology in India, recently chaired a high-level inter-ministerial meeting to review the increase of fellowship emoluments for junior research fellows (JRFs), senior research fellows (SRFs), and research associates (RAs) who currently work and will work in the future in various scientific research projects across various labs in India under DST, UGC, and CSIR.
Officials from 13 science and technology departments and ministries and the Principal Scientific Advisor of the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, participated in the meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and evaluate the current emoluments (pay and benefits) provided to JRFs, SRFs, and RAs through fellowship programs in India to potentially make improvements or adjustments to these programs. It is unclear at this time what specific decisions or recommendations may have been made due to the meeting. However, various factions of the Research Community, including the CEO of Biotecnika, Mr. Shekhar Suman, have repeatedly demanded a timely formula to hike fellowship periodically and match it with the current inflation.

AIRSA, which stands for All India Research Scholars association, has also demanded the following demands
1: Revise the fellowship automatically every four years as per previous norms, without any agitation
2: Disbursement of a regular fellowship from the funding agency
3: Development of proper infrastructure and policy for research in India.
4: To provide a medical facility for researchers in every institute
Indian Researchers are doing effortless work without being time-bound. Besides this, they are dedicated, determined, and devoted, which implicates India’s research and development. It contributes to the development and scientific growth of the country. Since the research scholars are the backbone of the country’s scientific growth, they cannot concentrate on the research due to day-out inflation and increasing living costs annually.
