Maths for Biology Students – Improve Your Concepts + Future Fields

What’s up this is Shekhar Suman from Biotecnika and today we are going to talk about something that is a bad dream for most – Maths. How can we improve maths?

A subject that most of us ignore post our 10 plus 2. We think it is a subject we don’t have to face ever again.

But if you notice, all competitive exams have this element in them and it hits us – why as biology students do we need to study math?

A simple explanation is – when you are doing experiments in biology, you need to record the readings, you need to analyze the data and report the results or findings.

The results will be for the most part in the form of bar graphs, pie charts, tables etc. You will have to conclude on the basis of these mathematical terms. So you have to make mathematics your friend.

So how to overcome this mental block that mathematics is hard?

This is mostly in part of the education system we have been brought up in. In your math classes – in a class of 50 students, the

teacher would not have had the time to individually pay attention to each student and ensure they have understood the concept. If a handful seem to get it, the class would have progressed further and there would be some of us left behind who were too embarrassed or insecure to admit that we have not understood.

We internalize this as a failure on our end and we develop a mental block for mathematics. So let me outline a few steps which will help you overcome this mental block

Step 1 – Start from A to reach Z

Do not be ashamed to go back to basics. There is no harm in relearning concepts that we have forgotten about or were not clear in the first place.

Coding for Biologists have various tools and techniques, languages etc which will be taught as courses and internships by Biotecnika, so check the link below to enrol and attend these courses.

Step 2 – You don’t need advanced math skills to survive in Biology

If you know how to do basic calculations with good speed and interpret data correctly then you can survive.

What to study?

  1. Number Systems
  2. Speed Maths
  3. Probability
  4. Calculus
  5. Linear Equation
  6. Statistics
  7. Linear Algebra
  8. Data Interpretation
  9. Logarithms
  10. Basic Concepts of Physics & Chemistry
