 Career Prospects of Industrial Biotechnology

Most of us think Industrial Biotechnology is a recently established domain! Well, to our surprise, this Industrial Biotechnology was established long back during 6000 BC when Neolithic cultures fermented grapes to produce wine, and Babylonians used microbial yeasts to produce beer. However, recently this field has been a boon to the healthcare industry.

Industrial Biotechnology, also known as white biotechnology, uses enzymes and microbes to manufacture bio-based products in various areas such as pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, food, paper, textiles, and many other industries. Industrial Biotechnology plays an important role in healthcare and medicine. Other applications of industrial biotechnology include pollution prevention, resource conservation, and cost minimization.

Loius Pasteur demonstrated that fermentation is a result of microbial activity, and later Alexander Fleming extracted penicillin from mold; since that time, industrial biotechnology has produced enzymes and drugs – easing out our daily work and saving many lives.

Once the understanding of fermentation improved, the production of cheese, yogurt, vinegar, and other food products came to light. Few applications of industrial biotechnology in our daily life include the production of bread, yogurt, and vinegar utilizing microbes and

the usage of enzymes in detergents.

Industrial biotechnology includes working with nature to increase and optimize available biochemical pathways that can be utilized in production. The Industrial biotechnology companies apply the information from the microbes’ genomic study to improve the microbial population and the microbial products.
