Equine Biotech Covid-19 test kits By IISc based start-up, develops an RT-PCR based Covid-19 Diagnostic test kits.
Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) based Covid-19 test kit “GlobalTM diagnostic kit” developed by a start-up has been approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in authorized Covid-19 diagnostic labs.
The indigenous RT-PCR diagnostic kit is developed by the start-up, Equine Biotech. This start-up was incubated at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The GlobalTM diagnostic kit offers an accurate and affordable diagnosis of Covid-19.
According to the founder of Equine Biotech, Professor Utpal Tatu, Department of Biochemistry, IISc, the kit takes around 1.5 hours to confirm the presence of the pandemic virus in the suspects.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has approved the kit in authorized Covid-19 diagnostic labs. The GlobalTM diagnostic kit is based on Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR).
The startup has been previously working on coronavirus infections for a few years now. The team was researching the infections caused by the virus even before the advent of the present pandemic. This experience helped them engineer the kit says, Professor Tatu.
The genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is an RNA. In RT-PCR, the RNA is transcribed into a complementary DNA by reverse transcription. This strand is then amplified. A fluorescent-based dye is used for real-time monitoring of the PCR-reaction. The severity of the infection can be detected by the degree of fluorescence.
According to the founders of the start-up, the kit is a user-friendly, multiplex RT-PCR kit. The specificity of the kit is 100 percent and the run time is relatively less compared to the other kits available in the present market. The company is currently working on getting the license for mass production, marketing, and distribution in collaboration with med-tech companies for this kit.
