Celebrating World Microbiome Day – 27th June 2020

Joint Celebration by K-tech, ABLE & BioTecNika

Webinar Agenda – Microbiome: Perceptions & Perspectives

Did you know that our body contains more microbes than human cells? Yes, that’s true! There are about 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells inside you! We know microorganisms are present everywhere in various habitats (in and on plants, animals, water, soil, food, and humans) living together in communities called microbiome within each of the many habitats.

When you hear the word microbe, what comes to your mind could be the numerous diseases they cause. But the microbiome or the microbes residing on and within the human body are not invaders, but they are beneficial colonizers. Disfunctioning of the microbiome could lead to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, and Fibromyalgia.

A person’s microbiome may influence their susceptibility to infectious diseases and contribute to chronic gastrointestinal illnesses like irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease. This is why it is important to understand the human microbiome.

Whenever we get a disease, most of us depend on antibiotics. But did you know taking antibiotics unnecessarily can disrupt our microbiota which

could negatively affect our immunity?

Likewise, there are numerous facts about the microbiome we are usually unaware of. But understanding the human microbiome could help us change our lifestyle for good and thereby stay healthy.

On this World microbiome day, Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society, Department of Electronics, IT, Bt and S&T, Government of Karnataka (www.k-tech.org), Association for Biotech Led Enterprises (www.ableindia.in) & Biotecnika together are giving you an opportunity to learn more about your microbiome so that you can keep your microbes and yourself healthy.
