Overview of the Scheme

The Newton International Fellowship Scheme was established to select the very best early-career postdoctoral researchers from all over the world, and enable them to work at UK research institutions for two years (or longer if working on a part-time basis).

This round of competition is delivered in partnership with the Department of
Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Under the terms of the innovative arrangement that is in place, the DBT will provide awardees with the third year of funding, to enable them to continue their research in an eligible research institution in India. Fellowships in this round of the scheme will, therefore, be awarded for a total of 36 months.

The aims of the Newton International Fellowship scheme are to:

• Support the development and training of postdoctoral researchers at an early stage of their career from any country outside the UK, by providing an opportunity to work at a UK research institution for two years.
• Ensure the best postdoctoral researchers across all relevant disciplines from around the
  world are supported in the UK.
• Foster long-term relations between Newton International Fellows and the UK research base through the establishment of an alumni programme for former Fellows of this Scheme. The alumni programme will include the possible provision of further funding for Newton International Fellows for follow-on activities, to enable links with UK-based researchers to be maintained and developed.

Applications are submitted via the online grant application system of the AMS, and include a proforma capturing the key information required by the DBT.

Subjects covered:

Academy of Medical Sciences – Applicants undertaking clinical and patient-orientated research.

By way of further clarification, clinical and patient-oriented research is considered to be clinical science and/or an interventional study on human participants at the individual or group level. The list is not intended to be exhaustive, but interventions could involve surgery, the administration of a drug, or be of a public health/preventative nature.

The eligible involvement of human participants in research could include an investigation where the experiments were conducted in vitro – for example, the use of human tissue or other biological samples, chemistry techniques, mathematical modelling or engineering, translational research and collaborative research with clinicians.

Eligibility:

Applicants must hold a higher research degree such as a PhD or MD, or expect to obtain one by the time funding starts, and should have no more than four years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry). Additionally, applicants should not hold UK citizenship and should be working outside of the UK at the point of application. Applicants must have a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial, and interdependent research proposal agreed with a UK and Indian co-applicant.

Applicants must have obtained a PhD from India and should be located in India at the time of application.

All the Indian institutes/universities funded by central/state governments will be eligible. All not-for-profit research organizations will also be eligible

Countries covered:

The Academy has established a partnership with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), India. Researchers from India are eligible to apply for the Newton International Fellowship scheme in this round.

Value of the award:

AMS funding (Years 1 and 2) will consist of:

• £24,000 per annum for subsistence costs (tax exempt)
• up to £8,000 per annum for consumables
• a one-off payment of up to £2,000 for relocation expenses in Year 1 only
• A contribution will also be made to enable the UK host institution to host a Fellowship; this will be equal to 50% of the total award.

DBT Funding (Year 3) will consist of:

• Monthly subsistence at INR 67,000 + HRA
• Consumable grant of INR 2,00,000
• A sum of INR 50,000 to the home institution for covering access to resources, facilities and infrastructure by the fellow.
• A contingency grant of INR 30,000
• A travel grant of INR 50,000 for attending domestic conferences/ delivering talks etc.
• The DBT will also provide a travel grant of INR 100,000 to enable the Awardee to visit India during Years 1 and 2 to attend training/evaluation/workshops organised by the DBT.

The AMS and DBT will both issue Award Letters outlining their respective financial support and responsibilities.
