Coronavirus Transmission Phase In India Is At Stage 2 Only – Says ICMR

While responding to the questions about a health ministry document, the government said today that India is still in the local transmission stage of the coronavirus pandemic. The health ministry document had stated that India is in “local transmission and limited community transmission phase.”

Luv Agarwal of the Indian Council of Medical Research said today that nowhere they are calling it community transmission, India is still in the local transmission phase.

The officials stressed the word ‘local transmission’ to avoid any misinterpretations regarding the coronavirus transmission phase in India.

Until now, India has reported 29 deaths from Covid-19 which has infected around 1,100 people.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had released a document last evening detailing about SOPs for transporting a suspected COVID-19 case.

The document stated “This SOP is applicable to the current phase of COVID-19 pandemic in India (local transmission and limited community transmission),”

There are four stages of transmission

Stage 1: Only those who traveled abroad test positive as all the cases reported are those imported from the affected countries.

Stage 2: Only those who come into contact with the imported cases

test positive. This is the stage of local transmission from those who traveled abroad to their relatives or acquaintances. Fewer people are infected and the source of infection is known. It is easier to trace the contacts the infected had. India is now at this stage of transmission.

Stage 3: This is the stage of community transmission. The patient is not exposed to any who traveled abroad or to any infected person. At this stage of transmission, it is unable to trace where the patient got the infection from and the rise is staggering.

Stage 4: The transmission gets completely out of control and takes the shape of an epidemic with no clear end of the disease.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, India is still in Stage 2, where the disease is spread only through the local transmission.
