BioEngineering Summer Training (BEST) Programme 2020

About:

In the summer of 2015, a brand-new undergraduate summer training program was started at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The purpose of the program is to introduce undergrads to the rapidly as well as continually progressing field of Bioengineering, with an opportunity to work together with researchers involved in this field. The eight-week programme combines hands-on research training with a varied set of didactic and research lectures. The tentative programme for the BEST fellows includes:

  • Summer research project with a Bioengineering faculty mentor
  • A research report and also presentations by the fellows summing up the research performed by them at the end of the programme
  • Short didactic lecture modules on Biomechanics, Tissue Engineering, Systems Biology and also Neural Engineering
  • Weekly research lectures by Bioengineering faculty, consisting of special lectures on science ethics, technical writing, and intellectual property
  • Interaction sessions with PhD students, Faculty as well as other researchers

Eligibility:

  • The program is open to Undergraduates in their 2nd or third year (at the time of application) or students in the first year of a Master’s program (at the time of application).
  • Students from all disciplines with an interest in interdisciplinary bioengineering research are urged to apply.

BEST fellows, please note:

  1. Research work will certainly be carried out in your mentor/adviser’s laboratory. You are expected to do assigned research work as well as send the last report at the end of the program, as well as make the last presentation. Amount of time to be spent in the lab will be decided by your mentor/adviser.
  2. In addition to research work in the appointed laboratory, attending BEST lectures, demonstration and other activities are mandatory.
  3. Attending a fun one-day retreat organized by BSSE is mandatory.

If you successfully complete the program as well as your research progression in the host laboratory is satisfactory, after that you will receive a fellowship amount of Rs.15,000.00 at the end of the program (3 weeks after 24 July 2020). At the time of registration, you are advised to give an undertaking that you will certainly spend complete duration (2 months) of the intern’s program in IISc campus.

Important Dates

  4. Chosen candidates registration fee payment deadline – 13th March 2020
  5. Program start date – 25th May 2020
  6. Program end date – 24th July 2020

Application procedure:

  • The deadline for applications is 14th February 2020. Please apply online.
  • The online form requires the candidate to provide the following info:
    1. Candidate details (including academic record).
    2. A brief statement on why you are interested in the BEST program.
    3. A brief statement on accomplishments.
    4. A short statement on previous research experience (if any).
    5. The candidates ought to select two projects from the list of projects. Projects for 2020 are available here.
  • Following receipt of the applications, the selection will be made on the basis of academic record, aptitude for research, accomplishments and also past research (if any type of).
  • Diversity among chosen students will certainly be thought about when all other requirements are judged similar.
  • Chosen fellows will certainly be educated between 2nd March 2020.
  • Following selection, the fellows will have till 13th March 2020 to send out a demand draft (or arrange ECS transfer) of Rs. 1,000 to register for the BEST programme.
  • If fellows decline participation following acceptance, waitlisted applicants will be contacted.

Please keep in mind the following:

  • If the BEST fellows complete the program successfully (as judged by their faculty mentors as well as BEST organizers), after that they will certainly receive a consolidated fellowship towards the end of the programme.
  • BEST fellows are expected to arrange their own accommodation, i.e. IISc campus accommodation will certainly NOT be provided. Additionally, no allowances are provided for food and daily expenditures.
