CSIR Young Scientist Awards 2020
The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) invites nominations for CSIR Young Scientist (YS) Awards for the year 2020. The awards are to be given for research contributions made primarily in India. The nominee should be a regular Scientist (as per CSRAP Rules) of CSIR system as well as need to have joined the CSIR lab on or prior to 26th September 2019. The age of the nominee ought to not be more than 35 years as on 26th September 2019.
The YS Awards are given each year in the following disciplines: (1) Biological Sciences, (2) Chemical Sciences, (3) Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, (4) Engineering Sciences

PREAMBLE
1) The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) introduced, in 1987, a scheme of Awards for Young Scientists in CSIR system in order to promote excellence in various fields of science as well as technology. These Awards are known as “CSIR Young Scientist Awards”.
NATURE
2) The Awards are given each year in the following areas:.
i) Biological Sciences, ii) Chemical Sciences, iii) Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and also Planetary Sciences,.
iv) Engineering Sciences v) Physical Sciences (consisting of instrumentation).
3) Each award contains a citation (signed by the Director-General, CSIR and also the Vice-President, CSIR), a cash prize of Rs.50000 (Rupees fifty thousand) as well as a plaque.
4) Awardees are entitled to a Special Honorarium of Rs 7500/- (Rupees seven thousand five hundred) each month till the age of 45 years. This incentive will be admissible as long as the recipient remains in the service of CSIR.
5) Research grant of Rs 25 lakh (Rupees twenty 5 lakh) over a duration of five years, is also provided, which is typical to the tune of Rs 5 lakh per annum per CSIR Young Scientist Awardee.
PURPOSE
6) Promoting excellence and recognising outstanding contributions made by the young CSIR scientists for their work done mainly in India during the last five years preceding the year of the Award.
ELIGIBILITY
7) Any scientist, taking part in research work in any of the CSIR laboratories/institutes, that is not more than 35 years old, as reckoned on 26 September (CSIR Foundation Day) of the previous year, is eligible for the Award.
8) The nominee needs to be a regular scientific staff of the CSIR system and also must have joined the CSIR lab on or before 26 September of the previous year.
NOMINATION
9) Directors/ Chairperson of Research Councils/ Bhatnagar Awardees can propose nominations only of scientists belonging to the CSIR laboratories/ institutes with which they are associated. Each of them can send normally a maximum of 2 nominations in each discipline.

ADVISORY COMMITTEES
10) Duly approved Advisory Committees (consisting of at least one Bhatnagar Awardee in each committee) will certainly be made up in the above-mentioned 5 fields for making selections for the “CSIR Young Scientist Awards”.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
11) Each nominee is needed to make a short presentation (15 mins) regarding his/her research work prior to the concerned Advisory Committee. This may be followed by 5 mins question-answer session/ discussion.
12) No nomination will be considered in absentia.
13) The awards are given for outstanding contributions made by the Young CSIR scientists on work done primarily in India.
14) The award in a specific discipline may be withheld if no candidate of requisite merit is forthcoming in that year.
15) The recommendations of the Advisory Committees are subject to approval by the Governing Body of CSIR.
PRESENTATION
16. The CSIR Young Scientist Awards will be presented to the recipients on 26 September, the CSIR Foundation Day every year at a formal function arranged by CSIR. At this ceremony, citations highlighting the work of the recipients are readout.
RESEARCH PROJECT
17. After the selections, each Awardee is required to submit a research project indicating the contingency and equipment grant (OM: HRD/SSB -08 NC/D/Awardee) that would be needed by him/her for the pursuit of research as per his/her proposed project. Period of the project might be for five years. The project must have the approval of the Director/ Research Council of the labs/ institute. The project is to be carried out independently. With effect from 1st April 1994, the Directors of CSIR labs/ institutes have been empowered to release the grant (presently Rs 5 lakh per annum per awardee, enhanced from the year 2008 onwards) for the approved projects to the CSIR Young Scientist Awardee, where he/ she is working. Intimation regarding this should be sent to Head, HRDG along with a copy of the project for reference as well as record. The grant might be claimed from Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, New Delhi, in the prescribed proforma along with annual progress report (Grant-in-aid Claim Bill).
