JNCASR invites applications for admission to M.S. (Engg. / Research) / PhD Programmes in Sciences and Engineering for the session starting from January 2020. M.S. (Engg. / Research) / PhD Programmes in Sciences and Engineering notification from students who have qualified in NET-JRF under CSIR/UGC fellowship schemes or DBT/ICMR – JRF/ INSPIRE-JRF or GATE / JEST / GPAT.

JNCASR includes a bright and diverse student body. Currently, there are 291 pupils registered in the several academic programmes of the Centre. While the vast majority of those pupils are pursuing Ph. D. degree, we also have pupils enrolled in our Integrated Ph. D., M. S. / M. S. (Engg.) programmes. The pupil population at JNCASR is drawn from across the length and breadth of this nation; additionally, we often have foreign students visiting the Centre under various exchange programmes.
The vast majority of new pupils joining the Centre during the August semester every year have been admitted, according to their performance in interviews carried out in the early summer. Particular programmes additionally consider admitting students halfway through the academic year (i.e., at
the onset of the January semester). So as to qualify for consideration in these interviews, students must fulfil various academic standards, as stated under a variety of degree programmes listed on the menu page. Admission in these programs is quite competitive.All pupils That Are admitted to the Centre’s programmes get stipends Which Are more than sufficient to pay their tuition and living expenses, such as hostel fees, etc
We normally expect pupils to take less than five years to finish a regular Ph. D. programme. Students that are admitted to the Integrated Ph. D. programme also get an M. S. degree, typically 3 years in their programme of study.
As well as carrying out research, students take a combination of required and optional courses. Nearly all courses are held on-campus and taught by the Centre’s faculty members. However, students may also opt to attend a few courses at other scientific institutes in the Bangalore region. Along with regular academic courses, additionally, there are seminar courses, and we’ve recently introduced a course on scientific writing. After finishing two years in their Ph. D. programmes, pupils need to pass an oral comprehensive exam, in which they are present and are quizzed about their research, in addition to the material covered in their own coursework.
Since 2002, the Centre is known as a”Deemed to be University” by the University Grants Commission, and pupils’ degrees are awarded directly by JNCASR. Since the inception of this Centre, 324 degrees are given; these include 178Ph. D.’s, 87 M. S. degrees (Integrated Ph. D.), 55 M. S. (Engg.) And 4 M. Sc. (by research – Biological Sciences).
Pupils that are alumni of the Centre have gone on to enjoy successful academic careers, and are spread out throughout the world.

Evolutionary and Integrative Biology Unit

1. How do animals know what time of day it is?
2. How can neuronal inter-connectivity in the brain affect the everyday rhythms of animals?
3. Why does a specific mortality rate stabilize some populations while destabilizing others?
4. How can patterns of resource availability and genetic relatedness affect the nature of animal social groups?
5. How can genetics and ecology interact to impact the course of evolutionary change?
These are a few of the questions we’re addressing, using a blend of approaches (lab experiments, computer simulations, field studies) and a selection of methods from quantitative genetics, reverse genomics, phenomics, behaviour studies, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, math and statistics. Our experimental work involves the use of both insect (fruit flies, ants) and mammalian (mouse) model systems, and our lab facilities comprise the world’s largest locomotor activity monitoring setup. Field studies are carried out on fruit flies in Bangalore and on elephants in the Western Ghats. Much of the work we do isn’t done anywhere else in India. Research in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit is in diverse areas of biology bound by the common thread of biomedical applications. The current research areas fall into the categories of Infectious Diseases, Cell Cycle, Chromatin organization and Transcription Regulation, Developmental Biology and Genetics.
Students have the opportunity to use approaches involving molecular biology and biochemistry, genetics, modern cell and developmental biology as well as the latest genomics approaches.

Right now, the research interests of this Unit include the study of synaptic function and its relationship with Intellectual Disability, neurogenetics of behaviour in Drosophila, molecular and cellular mechanisms of human brain/mind disorders, biomaterials for interfacing sensory organs with soft analogue devices as well as molecular neuro-oncology. The diversity in individual research themes of this faculty also reflect the widely differing kinds of scientific approaches and methods used in understanding how the nervous system functions and determine various behaviours of organisms, like humans.
Importance notice for prospective applicants:
- Interviews for admitting students in respective Units will be held subject to the vacancies available.
- Selection to the degree programmes of JNCASR is subject to exceptional academic background score/percentile/rank obtained in national fellowship exams, recommendations of the referees and performance at the interview.
- Mere fulfilling the vital qualifications/eligibility standards won’t require an applicant to be shortlisted for interview.
- The committee shortlists the candidates for written evaluation or interviews based on the Unit criteria.
- The Units offering admission will be mentioned in the application form.
- The Centre has the right to cancel, at any stage, the admission of a candidate who’s discovered to have been admitted to a course to which he/she isn’t entitled, being unqualified or ineligible in accordance with the regulations and rules in force.
