GUIDELINES GOVERNING THE JANAKI AMMAL-NATIONAL WOMEN BIOSCIENTISTS AWARDS

Goal:

To recognize outstanding contributions of women scientists in both basic and applied research in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology including agricultural, environmental and biomedical sciences with potential for application/product and technology development.

Nature of the Award:

National Women Bioscientist Award (Senior Category) (one)

The National Women Bioscientist Award (Senior Category) is given to senior women scientist for lifetime contributions, that have done outstanding research in the nation and has applied the results for the benefit of students and society. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5.00 lakh together with citation along with a gold medal.

National Women Bioscientist Award (Young Category) (Two)

The

National Women Bioscientists Award (Young Category) is awarded for outstanding contributions of women scientists under 45 years old in basic and applied research in the fields of biosciences and biotechnology including agricultural, environmental and biomedical sciences together with the potential for application/product and technology development. Contributions made during the past five years would be the main consideration. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1.00 lakh with citation plus a gold medal and Research Grant of Rs 5.00 lakh per annum for a period of five years.

Eligibility:

i) Any Citizen of India who’s engaged in basic and applied research in the areas of biosciences and biotechnology in the nation. The work for which nomination is made must have been completed in Indian institutes and acknowledged in the publications.

ii) For Senior Category Award: Citizens of India must have made lifetime significant and outstanding contribution in research in the fields of Biosciences/Biotechnology and has applied the results for the benefit of students and society and the work should have been done completely in India.

iii) For Young Category Award: Citizens of India must have made an outstanding and significant contribution in the fields of Biosciences/Biotechnology during the last five years and the work should have been done entirely in India.

iv) The senior category award is for excellence in research (and not for governance/promotion of Science) and not for age and consequently, there’s absolutely no age limitation. For the young category, the candidate must be below 45 years of age according to the closing date of nomination submission i.e. 31.8.2019.

Nominations:

Women scientists working in the Region of biosciences/biotechnology can be nominated by members of the SAC(O), DBT; Vice-Chancellors of Universities/ Deemed Universities; Chairman, UGC; DGs of CSIR, ICAR, ICMR, DRDO; Directors of National Research Laboratories etc; Presidents of approved scientific societies and academies of All India Nature; Secretaries of S&T Departments / Ministries like DST, DBT, DSIR, MES, MOEF, Atomic Energy, Department of Space, New and Renewable Energy, Commerce, Industry, Health & Family Welfare and Human Resource Development and Advisor/ Member (Science) Niti Aayog. Nominations will need to be sent in the prescribed proforma (Annexure).

Nomination from individuals sponsoring their own names won’t be considered.

Selection:

The selection of candidates for the award will be made on the basis of recommendations of a Selection Committee. Just nominations complete in all respects as per proforma will be considered.

Presentation of these awards: The awardees will receive the awards at a formal function organized by DBT.

Payment of TA/DA:

TA/DA to the awardees for attending the award ceremony will be paid by the Department of Biotechnology according to Govt. of India rules.
