The Day 1 of the Conference reckoned by an insightful speech rendered by the host of the day Ms.Rashmi Sanyal, Course Architect & Senior lecturer at Biotecnika Info Labs Pvt Ltd. Following her speech, the day began with a plethora of esteemed speakers who shared their valuable knowledge and research experiences in the field of CRISPR technology.

CRISPR CONGRESS Day 1 commenced with the talk of Dr. Neha Suman, MD and Academic head of Biotecnika. She gave a very perceptive and thoughtful talk on the topic ‘Crispr at a glance’  which really helped our attendees to grab a basic idea about this advanced gene editing technology. Followed by Dr.Neha Suman’s talk we had a poster presentation by Ms.Mrinmoyee Sengupta. She gave a vivid and lucid presentation on ‘CRISPR: Its role in prokaryotes and in genome editing’ briefing about different attributes of CRISPR in Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic genome editing. The second half of the Day 1 commenced with a dynamic speech of Ms.Urmimala Ray, Senior lecturer at Biotecnika. She gave a profound talk on ‘CRISPRi and CRISPRa and comprehensively discussed the mechanisms and applications of CRISPR interference and activation strategy. The last session was chaired by another eminent speaker Dr. Jitesh Kumar, Research Associate – Biotechnology & Synthetic Biology, CIAB. Dr.Kumar gave a sagacious talk on ‘CRISPR/Cas9 in plant systems & metabolic engineering in microbes’ and also shared his valuable research experiences in this filed to date. The fruitful day was concluded by Dr.Sunita Adak, a Senior Lecturer at Biotecnika.

Day 2 of CRISPR CONGRESS 2019 was even more Interactive & loaded with knowledge. The day started with a brief introduction of BioTecNika Prime, where researchers can buy the required lab supplies online. Dr. Sunita (one of the hosts) imparted positive thoughts into the attendees with a quote by Dalai Lama. She also shared information about the sky-touching popularity of CRISPR and how it is increasingly becoming an important part of the research work, across the globe. Later Mrs. Rashmi Sanyal (second host) announced the first session of the day by Dr. Jyothi Vishnumangalam, a Lead Scientist at Chai Bio. An elaborative discussion was carried out by her regarding methods for edit screenings. Dr. Vishnumangalam also discussed how real-time PCR is important in detecting point mutations. This was followed by an introduction to Chai PCR Tools (respective modes of operation and applications).

This was followed by a short presentation by Mr. Franco Goytia, Co-Founder and CEO, Caspr Biotech. He discussed, how Caspr Biotech is working in the direction of CRISPR based tool development. He also discussed, how CRISPR is better than qPCR in terms of sensitivity, robustness, and cost per run. Later, there was a 40-minute talk on the diverse applications of CRISPR by Dr. Preeti Saini, a young, budding academician in the field of CRISPR and Academic Specialist at BioTecNika. Participants had a lot of questions to ask about from her, regarding usage of CRISPR in tackling mosquito problems, dealing with superbugs and bioethanol production standardization using CRISPR. This gave them an insight that CRISPR is not limited to disease treatment, one can use the technology in multiple ways. This was followed by a presentation by Mr. Anil Kumar, SRF, National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute –NABI, Mohali, Punjab. The topic for his presentation was – CRISPR/Cas9 system as a targeted genome editing tool for Crop Plants. Starting from basic details of the CRISPR/Cas system, Mr. Anil described the validation of this system for gene editing in plants.

Prof. Dr. G. Manoj Someswar – Director General of Global Research Academy joined us after and gave an insight into the significance of gene editing in the prevention and treatment of complex human diseases. Prof. Someswar also interacted with the participants actively throughout the day, keeping them informed about the latest discoveries in this field. Thereafter a presentation was made by Mr. Aniket Dey, who represented Techno India University, delivering an interesting talk about CRISPR/Cas 9 technology for site-specific targeted genetic manipulation. The last presentation of the day was made by Dr. Prabakaran Ravichandran, a Norfolk State University Fellow. Dr. Prabakaran had a very interesting topic to discuss “Kryptonite – Turning off CRISPR”. He commenced the discussion with developments in the field of CRISPR over the last few decades, thereafter covering the types of diseases which can be created using CRISPR and the institutes where CRISPR studies are ongoing.

To end the CRISPR Congress on a high note, Dr. Jyothi Vishnumangalam and Prof. Manoj were awarded best speakers title. Another award for the most knowledgeable speaker was awarded to Dr. Preeti Saini. Mr. Anil Kumar and Mr. Aniket De bagged the awards for best poster and best paper presenters, respectively. Most active attendees award was shared by Sounak Chakraborty, Kirubhakaran Selvaraj, and Sachin.

Mrs. Rashmi Sanyal concluded the event by giving gratitude to all the attending participants and the supporting institutes, without whose support it would never have been possible to make this event a success.
