PREAMBLE

Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the rare men in human history that could be said to have advanced the cause of civilization through the medium of their own lives. Any strategy to honour his memory should take into consideration his multifaceted personality and his many splendid accomplishments. His ceaseless passion for the enhancement of the frontiers of knowledge and enrichment of the human mind are well known. To commemorate his name, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in 1968 instituted Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowships devoted to the encouragement, support and patronage of higher learning and also of free intellectual inquiry. These seek to provide an chance to exceptionally talented persons to dedicate themselves with a freedom to their creative work for a period of 2 years.

ELIGIBLITY

The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund provides one Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship Each Year. It’s available to

scholars in every discipline – the sciences in addition to the humanities – and to categories of individuals not generally covered by existing schemes such as writers, journalists, artists and civil servants – for undertaking not only projects of highly sophisticated and specialized subjects but also for study in depth of current problems applicable to the India of today. The sole criterion is that they ought to have a proven capacity for excellent work and a real desire to pursue a creative project, exploring new possibilities in their preferred area. Since Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Man today, as never before in human history, must live with change as a permanent partner in his activities and his Institutions”.This applies even to the most brilliant scholars, who often need periods that they can devote entirely to the enrichment of their intellectual capital, especially in view of the speed with which each discipline is developing in this nuclear age. The Fellowship is open to Indian citizens and Fellows have absolute freedom to work at areas of their choice within India.
