G N Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in
Biological Sciences and Technology 2019


The award is bestowed annually to an outstanding Indian scientist, that has made prominently important contributions, applied or basic, in the inter-disciplinary subject/field of Biological Sciences and Technology. The award will be given for the work done primarily in India throughout ten years preceding the year of the award. Nominations addressed to Scientist Incharge, SSB YSA Unit, Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi 110 012 must be sent according to prescribed proforma (Original + one copy) along with reprints of five most significant publications of the past 10-year’s period by 31 May 2019. 1. Preamble

A) The Award is named after

Prof. G N Ramachandran and is referred to as the ” G N Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in Biological Sciences & Technology”.

B) The Award is awarded annually for outstanding contributions to Biological Sciences & Technology.

2. Nature of Award

A Gold Medal along with a citation is to be presented to the recipient on 26 September, the CSIR Foundation Day. The medal is awarded for outstanding and notable research, applied or basic, in the inter-disciplinary subject/field of Biological Sciences and Technology.

3. Purpose

Recognition of outstanding work in Biological Sciences & Technology.

4. Eligibility

A) Any citizen of India engaged in research in Biological Sciences & Technology. an overseas citizen of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India will also be qualified.

B) The Award shall be bestowed on an individual, who in the opinion of Advisory Committee constituted by CSIR, has made conspicuously important and superior contributions to human knowledge and progress, basic or applied in the particular field of endeavour, which is his / her specialization.

C) The award will be awarded on the basis of contributions made through work completed mostly in India during the ten years, preceding the year of the prize (For this purpose”primarily” will mean” for the most part”).

5. Award

The Award shall receive annually together with the approval of the Governing Body of CSIR on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee.

6. Advisory Committee

A) The Advisory Committee for each year’s award would be comprised by DG, CSIR. The Committee would include a maximum of seven experts in broad areas.

B) On receipt of the nominations for a particular calendar year, CSIR will circulate the list of nominees together with the comprehensive statement of work and attainments of every candidate for all members of Advisory Committee.

C) Meeting of this Committee will be convened by CSIR, in consultation with the Chairperson for selecting the recipient of the”G N Ramachandran Award” along with the recommendations of the Committee would be submitted to DG, CSIR for approval.

D) The composition of Advisory Committee, the information submitted for their scrutiny, the proceedings of this meeting and the procedure for consideration of the nominations, other than as detailed herein would be kept confidential.

7. Nominations


a) Name of applicants may be proposed by a member of the Governing Body (CSIR); Presidents of approved scientific societies and academies of all-India character, Vice-Chancellors of Universities; Deemed Universities and Institutions of national importance; Directors of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Director-General of the main R & D organizations, like the Defense Research & Development Organization, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Indian Council of Medical Research, Directors of CSIR Laboratories, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Secretaries of the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Department of Biotechnology, etc..Member in-charge (Science) in the Planning Commission and former Prof GNR Gold Medal Awardees. University Faculties can recommend scientists working in their institutions only and route nominations through their respective Vice-Chancellors, while the faculties in IITs have been needed to deliver their nominations through their Directors. Directors-General of those R & D Organizations and also Chairperson of Commissions may sponsor names of those scientists working in their respective organizations. The Directors of CSIR labs can nominate applicants in disciplines of their interest regardless of the fact whether they’re working in CSIR labs or outside. The recipients of Prof GNR Gold Medal can send the nomination of a single person only for each year’s award. Nominations from other individuals sponsoring their own names or of others aren’t acceptable. Each nomination ought to be accompanied by thorough statements of work and attainments of the nominee along with a critical assessment report (not more than 500 words) bringing out the significance of important research and development contributions of the nominee made during the ten years preceding the year of the Prize.

B) A candidate, once nominated, could be considered for a total period of 3 years, if otherwise eligible. After such a nomination has been obtained, CSIR can correspond directly with the candidate for supplementary information, if needed.

8. Presentation


a) The Award will be presented to the recipient on 26 September, the CSIR Foundation Day.

B) In all matters of the award of “G N Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in Biological Sciences & Technology” the conclusion of CSIR will be final.
