The FMI PhD programs offer students the opportunity to carry out cutting-edge biomedical research in a stimulating, highly international and collaborative atmosphere. Affiliated with the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research and the University of Basel, the FMI provides interdisciplinary training and access to innovative technologies in the form of innovative technology platforms, including e.g. advanced microscopy, genomics, proteomics, protein structure and bioinformatics.
PhD students work collectively with internationally recognized scientists in the fields of epigenetics, neurobiology, and quantitative biology, developing their research projects together with their group leader. Along with guidance from their advisor, students will also be advised by their thesis committee members, in addition to the FMI Dean of Students as well as the Guidance Counsellor who serve to support their professional and academic development.
A broad range of theoretical and practical courses is available at both the FMI and the University of Basel (see also
Graduate Teaching Program of the University of Basel.) After the conclusion of the research, submission of a written thesis and successful thesis defense, applicants have been awarded a PhD from the University of Basel.Graduate teaching program
Together with the Biozentrum and the Department of Biomedicine of the University of Basel, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), the FMI participates in an international and interdisciplinary graduate teaching program in the areas of
- neurobiology
- cell biology
- developmental biology
- biophysical chemistry
- structural biology
- systems biology
- bioinformatics
- infection biology.
PhD students are required to complete 12 semester hours of coursework during their PhD thesis.

General requirements
To be approved for graduate studies at the Friedrich Miescher Institute, applicants should hold a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent program within their home country (MSc., Diploma, DEA etc.). But, please note that a Bachelor’s degree doesn’t qualify for entrance to our PhD Program.
There are two deadlines every year in May and November. All applications are assessed by group leaders with openings. A shortlist of applicants will be invited for interviews in June and January, respectively.

Application Deadline:
Application deadlines are on May 1st and November 16th.
The application form opens approximately 3 months prior to each deadline.
The interviews in Basel occur approximately 7 to 8 weeks after each deadline.
