Invitation to pursue a PhD programme in specialized areas of Physical, Chemical, Life and Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) Sciences at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology,
Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, was founded in 1984 by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) for the pursuit of R&D in the areas of Accelerators, Lasers and related technologies. Since then, the Centre has set up two Synchrotron Radiation Sources: Indus-1 & Indus-2, which are national research facilities, and many smaller accelerators for radiation processing applications. The Centre has excellent cryogenic facilities as well as state-of-the-art equipment for low-temperature physics measurements. A variety of laser systems, particularly high power lasers, have been built and are being used for a wide range of applications. These include gas lasers (like copper vapour lasers, CO2 lasers), solid-state lasers (like – diode pumped solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, high power lasers) for the studies in the areas like –bio-medical applications of lasers, laser materials processing, and laser-plasma interaction. The Centre also has a long-standing program in the areas of RF-superconductivity, low-temperature physics, material science, cold atom physics, non-linear optics, optoelectronics, nano-science, micro-electro-mechanical systems, additive manufacturing, etc.
RRCAT is a Constituent Institute of the “Homi Bhabha National Institute” (HBNI), a Deemed to be University with NAAC “A” grade. RRCAT invites students with appropriate qualifications to pursue a PhD program in various specialized areas of Physical, Chemical, Life and Engineering Sciences as listed above. As per the rules of HBNI, the PhD program consists of course work of one-year duration and research work leading to PhD thesis. The PhD 2019 program will commence on 1st August 2019. DAE Research Fellowships will be offered to those selected for the pursuit of PhD. The present fellowship amount is ` 25,000 per month for the first two years (as Junior Research Fellow) and ` 28,000 per month for the subsequent three years (as Senior Research Fellow), subject to satisfactory yearly progress.
For Life Sciences: M.Sc. degree in Life Sciences/ Biotechnology/biochemistry/ microbiology with a minimum of 60% overall marks, and must have qualified CSIR-UGC NET (December 2017 or June/ December 2018: JRF, not lecturership)/ BET-2018/ GATE (i.e., GATE-2017/ GATE-2018/ GATE-2019).
Those applicants who are completing the qualifying degree in summer of 2018 can also apply, provided they have a minimum of 60% overall marks in the completed semesters. If selected, the final degree mark sheet should be submitted by 1st November 2019. Continuation in the PhD programme will be subject to the candidate obtaining a minimum of 60% marks overall (converted to percentage as per the concerned university’s rules). 5 year integrated M.S. (of IISERs) will be treated at par with 5 years integrated M.Sc.
Nationality: The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
The selection of the students for the PhD programme will be a two-step process:
- Screening of the applications, followed by
- An interview of the short-listed candidates by the Selection Committees.
For Life Sciences, the screening will be done on the basis of the applicant’s score/ rank in CSIR-UGC NET/ BET/ GATE.
The short-listed Life Sciences candidates shall be called for interview to be conducted tentatively during 10th and 11th June 2019 at RRCAT, Indore.
All the outstation applicants called for interview will be paid to and fro sleeper class train fare by the shortest route or the actual fare, whichever is less. This is subject to the verification of their eligibility from the original documents before the interview. Please note that the candidates appearing for interview will have to submit proof of overall ≥ 60% marks in the completed semesters. In absence of this, the candidate will not be interviewed and the travel cost will not be reimbursed.
The candidates selected in the interviews will be asked to report at RRCAT, Guest House and Hostels Complex on 8th July 2019 for Physics and 15th July 2019 for other disciplines. Next day to the date of reporting, they will be sent for medical examination. The Physics candidates will visit all the guides of the Ph.D. vacancies offered to get a thorough idea about the Ph.D. topics offered. This process and the assignment of Ph.D. topic to each candidate will be finalized by 29th July 2019. The Life Sciences candidates may be deputed to BARC Training School, Mumbai, for their one year course work, and the Physical Sciences candidates will carry out their one year course work at BARC Training School at RRCAT, Indore, from the first week of August 2019.
