The Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS) is a partnership Involving the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and the India-based philanthropic Tata Trusts. TIGS is presently financed by a generous gift from the Tata Trusts, which can be one of India’s earliest, non-sectarian philanthropic organizations which have established several of India’s leading institutions, like the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Tata Memorial Hospital and many other institutions of national and global significance. The overarching objective of TIGS is to advance international science and technology research in a socially aware and ethical way to finally find solutions to tackle a number of the planet’s most pressing problems, which range from general health to agriculture.

TIGS-India, a new public charitable Trust, has been launched in summer 2017, also functions as a Center in the Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine Institute (inStem) at Bangalore

, Karnataka. TIGS-India will work with its associate institute, TIGS-UC San Diego to instruct employees, advance research, and also ease the broad applications leveraging the most recent genetics technology to the advancement of human health and agriculture within India, and advancing knowledge in fundamental sciences.

A fully-funded, postdoctoral training opportunity within the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society is instantly available to applicants with a PhD in the following or related fields:

evolutionary genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, experimental genomics, statistics, molecular biology, or genetics.

The most competitive candidates will possess expertise in computational genomics and/or experimental genomics. Candidates may work in the lab of Professor J.J. Emerson in the University of California Irvine (http://emersonlab.org/).

Strong applicants will have expertise in covering a few of the next two skillsets. Familiarity with both is a plus:

  • Command line and shell scripting and a couple of programming languages (e.g. python or Perl).
  • experimental genomics, especially with high molecular weight DNA isolation and library prep for high throughput genomics approaches (e.g. Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore, Hi-C, along with optical mapping)

Funding will be available for a maximum length of 2 years, subject to a clear definition of project goals, biannual job reports, formal yearly presentations and an yearly analysis of significant advancement both by the TIGS faculty mentor and a TIGS-UC San Diego Advisory Group chaired by the Associate Director of this Institute. Each award covers the expenses of this postdoctoral stipend, benefits, laboratory supplies, travelling to San Diego, and equipment.
