EMBO Short-Term Fellowships

The notification for the EMBO Short-Term Fellowships has been released. The short term fellowship program has benefits of travel allowances included. About:

Short-Term Fellowships fund research exchanges of up to 3 months between labs in eligible countries. Awarded applicants can remain on their research visit for an extra three months (max ), nevertheless, EMBO won’t offer to finance for this elongated period. The intention is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups employing techniques which are inaccessible in the candidate’s lab. Short-Term Fellowships aren’t awarded for exchanges involving two laboratories in precisely the same country. Short-Term Fellowships are designed for joint research work instead of consultations. The fellowships cover travelling plus subsistence of this fellow only and not of dependents.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be active researchers in any point in their career with a minimum of one year of research experience in the PhD-student level.
  • EMBO Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for research exchanges between labs in EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or Cooperation Partners.  EMBO Short-Term Fellowships aren’t awarded for exchanges involving two laboratories in precisely the same country.
  • Only in unique cases will EMBO Short-Term fellowships be given for research visits outside the countries listed above. For such instances, it’s very important that a justification is supplied why there’s no appropriate experience or technologies at EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or even Cooperation Partners.
  • Applications from external EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or even Cooperation Partners won’t be considered.
  • Applications for the exclusive purpose of training in a method rather than as a part of a broader research project, won’t be considered for financing.
  • EMBO doesn’t consider applications for Short-Term Fellowships to lengthen visits started under other auspices, or as bridging fellowships between, or before, long-term stays funded by EMBO or other organizations.
  • Applications for fellowships to attend courses, workshops, or symposia won’t be considered.

Application:

There’s absolutely no deadline for applications, but it is suggested to apply three weeks before the planned starting date. Applications received or completed just after the onset of the trip won’t be considered.

The application procedure is managed through the online application system.

Applications and supporting documentation (two references, receiving institute approval ) are only accepted through the online application system.

Evaluation:

All applications are analyzed at the EMBO Fellowship Office to make sure they are complete and eligible. Receipt of complete applications will be acknowledged via email.

Applications are judged on the following standards:

  • CV of the candidate, and specifically research expertise.
  • Quality of this project to be developed in the host lab (novelty, feasibility).
  • The suitability of the host lab for the proposed work.
  • Worth of this exchange for the labs involved (collaboration, co-publication).

The moment a decision is reached, normally within three to four months from submission of a complete application, applicants are informed promptly.

Benefits:

Duration of support

Short-Term Fellowships are meant for visits of 1 week (7 days) up to 3 months (90 days).  Awarded applicants can remain on their research visit for an extra three months (max ), nevertheless, EMBO won’t offer to finance for this elongated period.

Travelling Expenses and stipend

The fellowships contribute to travel expenses and subsistence of this fellow although not of any dependents. The subsistence rate is dependent upon the country being visited.

End of fellowship report

At the conclusion of the fellowship, applicants are requested to provide EMBO with a report of the activity in the host institute. The report ought to be sent to [email protected].

Please be aware that you will need to indicate your ASTF number along with your existing address in your final report.

The final report should be submitted to the fellowship office within 6 months of finishing the research trip. The report must be approximately two pages and should summarize the results in addition to possible plans for additional work to be undertaken. It may contain diagrams, charts or illustrations. Upon receipt of the final report, the EMBO office will send a certification saying the start date and length of the fellowship, the place the location where it had been held, the ASTF number along with the title of this project developed.

With the final report, applicants should provide a letter signed by their home institution certifying that they’ve returned to work there for at least 6 months after the conclusion of their EMBO Short-Term Fellowship.
