Who does not love a chilled can of soda any day, any time? We all love those little cans of sugary drinks which we know is the culprit behind ridiculous weight gain and could possibly push us to being diabetics. Well, checking the nutritional information on the rear of any soft drink bottle sends me reeling even though I do not have diabetes (yet).

Sugars are the chief ingredient in soft drinks and include glucose, fructose and sucrose depending upon the global regions where they are found. Be it those “Soft drinks” as they are referred to in Australia, or ‘sodas’ in the US and ‘fizzy drinks’ in the UK, they are all non-alcoholic, carbonated, sugar-sweetened beverages.

These forms of sugars additionally are found to have different responses from the body:
Glucose, undoubtedly the most heard of, is found to rapidly elevate levels of blood glucose and insulin if consumed in high quantities; this elevation may in turn damage brain functioning. And because high blood glucose is associated with diabetes, glucose could indirectly be an influencing factor.

Fructose on the other hand, being of higher concentration in mainly fruits, that are generally not over consumed and additionally provide important dietary

supplements. However, if there is a considerable quantity of added fructose in the diet in place of its naturally occurring self, it is known to contribute to fatty liver disease and harm the liver in a similar fashion to alcohol.

Despite knowing these conditions as results of high sugar consumption, what could conclusively the establish the theory is considering if these individuals involved in the studies were simply consuming too much energy rich food or whether soft drinks merely coincide with poor eating choices.

A handful of countries have now implemented taxation on soft drinks, and the New South Wales Health Department has recently announced that sugary drinks will be phased out of vending machines, cafes and catering services in the state’s health facilities by December. More initiative in this direction needs to be taken up to protect people and also to create awareness amongst them regarding the adverse health effects soft drinks can have.
