The need was reiterated in a meeting of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1941, which inter alia discussed the subject of economic crops.The ICAR scheme for ‘Plant Introduction’ commenced functioning in 1946 in the then Botany Division of IARI under the leadership of the Late Dr. Harbhajan Singh as the first ‘Operational Scientist’. The unit was further expanded and strengthened as ‘Plant Introduction and Exploration Organization’ in the Botany Division in 1956, and later developed as a separate ‘Division of Plant Introduction’ in IARI in 1961. Subsequently, on the recommendations of the ‘High Level Committee’ constituted by the Government of India in 1970, the ‘Division of Plant Introduction’ was upgraded to an independent institute ‘National Bureau of Plant Introduction’ in August 1976 which was rechristened as ‘National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources’ (NBPGR) in January 1977.

Qualifications –
Junior Research Fellow (Biotechnology)
- Essential – Masters in Biotechnology/Plant Breeding and Genetics/ any other life science from a recognized university with minimum of First class in UG and PG with experience in molecular techniques.
- Desirable – Experience in cloning and expression analysis as evidenced from thesis or publication.
Junior Research Fellow (Plant Breeding and Genetics)
- Essential – Masters in Plant Breeding and Genetics/ any other agricultural science with experience in conducting field trials from a recognized university with minimum of First class in UG and PG, Experience in handling field data.
- Desirable – any statistical tool and should be willing to learn new tools
Junior Research Fellow (Agricultural Bioinformatics)
- Essential – Masters in Bioinformatics from any Agricultural or other recognized professional
- Desirable – NGS data an is, pipeline development, PERL or bi RL, PYTHON, coding, NGS data analysis, data base development and management

- The selected candidates will be stationed at NBPGR, New Delhi but willing to attend field trials conducted at different stations or state agricultural universities.
- Should be willing to complete the allotted work in time.
- Work may be allotted based on the project requirement than the expertise of the candidate.
