About the Exam
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, through its nodal agency, Regional Center for Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad, is conducting the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) 2026. Applications are invited from bona fide Indian citizens residing in India for the award of the DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) to pursue research in frontier areas of Biotechnology across the country.
Based on performance in BET 2026, candidates will be shortlisted under Category I and Category II of the DBT-JRF Program. Reservation norms as per the Government of India guidelines will be followed.
- Category I: Eligible for fellowship at any recognized University/Institution across India upon enrollment in a Ph.D. program.
- Category-II: Eligible for DBT-sponsored projects with a fellowship equivalent to NET/GATE (as per DST guidelines) and/or Ph.D. enrolment through institutional selection. However, Category-II does not guarantee fellowship under DBT-JRF.
Eligibility Criteria
Academic Qualification
Candidates must have qualifications in Biotechnology/Life Sciences or allied disciplines such as Biomedical, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Botany, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Zoology, or related fields.
- 4-year/8-semester UG degree (with research):
Minimum 75% aggregate marks (5% relaxation as per NEP 2020 & UGC Ph.D. regulations 2022). - B.Tech/B.E:
- 60% (General/EWS/OBC)
- 55% (SC/ST/Differently Abled)
- Master’s Degree (M.Sc./M.Tech./M.VSc./M.Pharm./Integrated/M.B.B.S):
- 60% (General/EWS/OBC)
- 55% (SC/ST/Differently Abled)
Age Limit
- Maximum 28 years (General/EWS)
- Relaxation:
- 5 years: SC/ST/Differently Abled/Women
- 3 years: OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)
Details of the Award
- Category-I candidates must enroll in a Ph.D. program within 2 years of the award.
- Fellowship details:
- JRF: ₹37,000/month (first 2 years)
- SRF: ₹42,000/month (next 3 years, after evaluation)
- Additional benefits:
- HRA (if applicable)
- ₹30,000 contingency per annum
Candidates must complete document verification; ineligible or incorrect submissions will lead to disqualification.

Candidates will be shortlisted based on merit through a computer-based Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET).

Pattern of Examination
- The exam will be conducted in English only.
- The paper consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs):
Section A
- 50 compulsory questions (10+2 level)
- Subjects: General Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, General Aptitude, Analytical & Quantitative Ability, General Biotechnology
- Marks: +3 per question
- Negative marking: -1 per incorrect answer
Section B
- 150 questions (attempt any 50)
- Focus: Specialized Biotechnology topics
- Marks: +3 per question
- Negative marking: -1 per incorrect answer
Choice of Examination Cities
Candidates may select four preferred cities. Allocation will be based on availability, and changes may occur due to administrative reasons. No TA/DA will be provided.
