Summer Internship Programme (SIP) Overview

The Summer Internship Programme (SIP) at IIPE, initiated in 2022, provides an excellent platform for pre-final year students of B.E./B.Tech. and M.Sc./M.S./M.Tech. to explore their research potential. Spanning 8 weeks, the SIP encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Subject Areas of Internship:

  • Biosciences/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Earth Sciences

Faculty and their Area of Expertise

  • Applicants may refer to the IIPE Faculty Website for faculty and their areas of expertise. Faculty preference may be indicated, subject to availability.

Number of Internship Positions

  • A maximum of two SIP Interns will be allowed per faculty, including Institute Funded, Project Funded, and Self-Funded interns.

Timeline of Internship:

  • The internship runs for 8 weeks during the summer vacation, typically 2 to 2.5 months, as per the Institute’s academic calendar.

Cost of Internship Application:

  • The application fee is Rs. 500/-. The fee is non-refundable and payable through the Payment Gateway.

Funding of SIP Interns

  • Institute Funded: Consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000/- for 8 weeks post-internship completion.
  • Project Funded: Maximum stipend of Rs. 10,000/- for 8 weeks, following funding agency guidelines for externally funded projects.
  • Self-Funded: Opportunity to work on projects without IIPE stipend/funding.

SIP Selection Committee:

  • Applications will be reviewed by Department-wise SIP Selection Committees, comprising three members including the Head of the Department as Chairperson.

Selection Criteria

  • Eligible courses and semesters: B.E./B.Tech. (6th Semester), M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech. (2nd Semester), Dual degree M.Tech./M.Sc. (8th Semester).
  • Selection based on CGPA, research experience, awards, proposed work, and letters of recommendation.
  • Minimum CGPA: 7.5 for students from top institutes; 8.5 for others. More than 65% in 10th and 10+2.
  • Students with pending backlogs or disciplinary actions are ineligible.

Evaluation of SIP Interns:

  • Interns present their work midway and at the end of the internship to assessment committees. Commendation certificates awarded for outstanding performance.

Other Guidelines

  • SIP Guidelines take effect after President’s approval.
  • A maximum of two interns per faculty.
  • Intern category distribution: Institute Funded (25%), Project Funded (50%), Self-Funded (25%).
  • Additional expenses and medical coverage to be managed by interns.
  • Mandatory 8-week participation for completion certificate. Extended internship possible if required.
  • Issued temporary institute ID cards for accessing facilities.
  • Applications must be submitted online with all documents signed by the Head of Department.

  • Internship Programme begins: 11-05-2026 to 25-05-2026 (Second Monday of May to Last Monday of May)
  • Mid-Programme Review: After four weeks
  • Poster Presentation and Report Submission, Completion of SIP form and feedback, Award of Internship Completion Certificate: After Eight weeks
