DBT Launches SUJVIKA Portal to Boost AI in Biotechnology and Strengthen India’s Bioeconomy
On the occasion of its 40th Foundation Day, the DBT (Department of Biotechnology) unveiled a new digital platform called SUJVIKA, aimed at strengthening India’s Biotechnology sector. The portal showcases recent developments and innovations, including the growing role of AI in Biotechnology. The portal was launched by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi during celebrations marking four decades of DBT’s establishment in the year 1986.
What is SUJVIKA and Its Role in AI in Biotechnology
SUJVIKA is an AI-enabled data portal that brings together verified information on India’s Biotechnology imports. Developed in collaboration with the ABLE (Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises), the platform presents detailed and organised data on products such as Biochemical materials, industrial enzymes, and other Biotechnology-related imports. By making this information easily accessible, the Government hopes to help Researchers, startups, and industry leaders understand where India depends heavily on foreign supplies and where there is scope for domestic production.
The officials state that the portal will support better planning and encourage investment in areas where India currently imports high-value or high-volume Biotechnology products. The broader aim is to reduce dependence on imports and promote self-reliance in Biomanufacturing. This initiative is a clear example of AI in Biotechnology being used to guide policy and industrial decisions.
Growth of India’s Bioeconomy
The launch comes at a time when India’s Bioeconomy has witnessed rapid growth. From an estimated size of around 10 billion US dollars in 2014, it has expanded to approximately 165.7 billion US dollars in 2024. The number of Biotechnology startups has also risen sharply over the past decade, increasing from fewer than 100 to more than 11,000. India today is counted among the world’s leading vaccine producers and an emerging global hub for Biotechnology innovation.
The portal’s insights into imports and production needs demonstrate how AI in Biotechnology can accelerate growth and innovation in India’s Bioeconomy.
Policies, Research, and Infrastructure Support
Policy measures have played a key role in this expansion, including the recently approved BioE3 Policy. The BioE3 Policy focuses on Biotechnology for the economy, environment, and employment, thereby aiming to strengthen high-performance Biomanufacturing in the country. Institutions including DBT, BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council), and BRIC continue to support Research, startup development, as well as innovation through funding and advanced infrastructure.
The Government has also invested in Research facilities and incubation networks. A National Biofoundry Network with specialised facilities has been set up to accelerate product development. Nearly 95 bio-incubators in over 21 States and Union Territories are currently supporting more than 1,800 startups and Research projects. In addition, a ₹2,000 crore national call has been announced as part of a larger Research and innovation initiative. These efforts showcase the growing integration of AI in Biotechnology to optimise R&D (Research and Development).
Scientific Milestones and Future Outlook
Recent Scientific milestones further underline the sector’s progress. The GenomeIndia Project successfully sequenced 10,000 individuals from diverse (99) populations, contributing valuable data for future Medical Research. India has also conducted its first human gene therapy trial for Severe Hemophilia A, achieving sustained production of the required clotting factor VIII. Collaboration with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has opened new areas of Research in Space Medicine and Life Sciences.
With the launch of SUJVIKA, the Government signals its intent to combine data, Technology, and Scientific Research to build a stronger and more self-reliant Biotechnology ecosystem. By integrating AI in Biotechnology, this initiative aligns with the broader vision of making India a developed nation by 2047.
