About the Institute:
The Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) is a leading research institute under the MNRE, Government of India, dedicated to promoting innovation in bio-energy and allied sciences. Located in Kapurthala, Punjab, SSS-NIBE works on advanced areas such as biomass gasification, biofuels, hydrogen production, biochar, biochemicals, and renewable energy materials.
Through its Bio-Energy Promotion Fellowship, the institute nurtures talented researchers and fosters interdisciplinary projects that address global challenges in clean energy, climate change, and sustainable development.
Available Positions:
1. Junior Research Fellow (JRF)
- Number of Positions: As per project requirement
- Fellowship: ₹37,000 per month + HRA (as per rules)
- Age Limit: 28 years (relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates)
- Place of Work: SSS-NIBE, Kapurthala (Punjab)
- Tenure: Initially for 2 years, extendable by 1 year based on performance
Essential Qualifications:

60% marks or equivalent CGPA in B.E./B.Tech. in Chemical, Mechanical, Agricultural, Civil, Biochemical, Energy, Environmental, or allied engineering disciplines
OR
60% marks in M.Sc. (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or allied life sciences) -
Valid GATE/NET qualification is mandatory
Job Responsibilities:

Conduct research in bio-energy and allied life science research areas under expert supervision.

Assist in experimental design, data analysis, and project documentation.

Support senior researchers in the development of innovative bio-energy solutions.

Contribute to progress reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
2. Senior Research Fellow (SRF)
- Number of Positions: As per project requirement
- Fellowship: ₹42,000 per month + HRA (as per rules)
- Age Limit: 32 years (relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates)
- Place of Work: SSS-NIBE, Kapurthala (Punjab)
- Tenure: 3 years, extendable by 1 year based on performance
Essential Qualifications:
M.E./M.Tech. (Chemical, Mechanical, Agricultural, Civil, Biochemical, Bioenergy, Energy Science, Environmental, or allied engineering disciplines) with at least 60% marks
OR
M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. with at least 60% marks and 2 years of research experience supported by fellowship/associateship and publications in standard refereed journals.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead independent and collaborative research in bio-energy conversion, biofuel production, or biomass valorisation.
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to high-quality publications and patents.
- Participate in review meetings and interdisciplinary research initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory research standards.
Research Focus Areas
Fellows under this program will work across a wide range of bio-energy and life science research themes, including:
- Biomass resource assessment, analytics, and life-cycle management
- Gasification and pyrolysis for biohydrogen and syngas generation
- Biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass
- Biochar and carbon-based materials for clean energy storage
- Development of fuel cells and sustainable bio-energy systems

- The fellowship positions are purely temporary and co-terminus with the project.
- Only Indian citizens residing in India are eligible to apply.
- Selected candidates may be considered for Ph.D. registration at IIT Roorkee, as per its admission guidelines.
- The combined tenure of JRF & SRF will not exceed 5 years.
- Performance reviews will determine continuation or upgradation of the fellowship.
- Selected fellows must work full-time on assigned research projects and adhere to institutional regulations.
