WOMEN IN BRAIN AGEING RESEARCH: IISc Launches Fellowship to Support Women in Research

Did you know that women are underrepresented in Scientific research, especially in studying the ageing brain? The Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has launched the “Amba Subba Rao Fellowship for Women Researchers” to support early career women scientists working in the field of brain ageing.

Philanthropic Support from Amba Subba Rao’s Family:

From the family of the late Amba Subba Rao, the Fellowship for Women Researchers has been established through a philanthropic contribution, while the exact amount of the donation has not been disclosed but the support is expected to create significant opportunities in the field of neuroscience for women.

Tackling Gender Inequalities in STEM

Tackling gender inequality in science, particularly in the field of brain aging is the main objective where women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) continue to be fewer and many leave the field early due to various challenges, a problem often referred to as “leaky pipeline”.

This fellowship aims to provide resources and institutional support to help women continue their research careers at Centre for Brain Research(CBR).

Family’s Vision and Statement:

A person from the

family of Amba Subba Rao said, “It is our privilege to honour late Amba Subba Rao’s vision by nurturing women in STEM. We hope this fellowship will help tackle inequalities that hinder women’s progress in academic research and create role models for future generations.”

Support from Pratiksha Trust:

A founder-trustee of Pratiksha Trust, Kris Gopalakrishnan, welcomed the Fellowship for Women Researchers emphasizing that India’s research ecosystem, particularly in Life Sciences can be enhanced greatly through sustained philanthropic support.

CBR Director Highlights Impact:

The Director of CBR, Prof. K.V.S. Hari addressed that “We are truly inspired by the generosity of visionary philanthropists who share our mission. Their support helps us to progress towards our goal of healthier brain aging and better quality of life for the elderly.”

Expected Benefits of the Fellowship :

The fellowship is expected to provide women scientists with the guidance, support, and recognition they need to continue contributing to research on brain aging, and to serve as role models for future generations in STEM.

“Empowering women today for a brighter future in science.”
