National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) is an autonomous Institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. NABI aims at catalysing the transformation of the Agri-food sector in India by being a nodal organization for knowledge generation and translational science leading to value-added products based on Agri-Food biotech innovations for improved household nutritional security. Since its inception in 2010, NABI is involved in research activities for Bio-fortification, the development of designer crops for improved nutrition, providing sustainable and novel solutions for quality food and nutrition, and the development of evidence-based functional foods to counter malnutrition. The food and nutritional Biotechnology division at NABI requires the following research personnel purely on a temporary basis.

Post I

1. Project Title: “PacBio Iso-seq analysis of male meiocytes and pollen grains of sorghum to elucidate heat stress-induced transcriptomic changes.” (NABI’s Core)

Principle Investigator: Dr. Rita Sharma, Scientist-E

Positions: Research Associate –I (One position)

Duration: Initial appointment would be for 1 year (extendable to 2 years based on performance

).

Essential Qualification: Ph.D. in any branch of life sciences/bioinformatics/computational biology (if the degree is awaited, proof for a provisional degree has to be submitted).

Experience: Demonstrated expertise in transcriptomics/ proteomics/ metabolomics/ epigenomics/Pacbio sequencing data analysis, Plant Molecular biology with experience in plant tissue culture in crop plants, plant physiology and heat stress assays would be desirable.

Emoluments: Rs.58,000/-month + HRA, depending on years of experience. RA Emoluments and Eligibility conditions are as per DST OM: DST/PCPM/Z-06/2022 dated June 26, 2023.

Age limit: 40 years for RA.

Post II

2. Project Title: “Engineering methanol-free Pichia pastoris system for sustainable protein production.” (GAP-97)

Principle Investigator: Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Scientist-C

Positions: Project Associate I (One position)

Duration: The Project Associate I is a purely temporary assignment and is tenable for a period of 3 years or the last date of the project, whichever is earlier.

Essential Qualification: Master’s in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Life Science/Molecular Biology. The candidate should have qualified for any one of the national-level examinations (CSIR-UGC-NET or GATE). Additionally, candidates will be eligible for an interview if they have qualified for National Level examinations conducted by central government departments and their agencies and institutions.

Desirable Experience: Experience in molecular techniques, PCR, gel electrophoresis, gene editing, CRISPR Cas, microbial fermentation, and protein purification.

Job profile: The Project Associate I will work on strain engineering of Pichia pastoris, with a primary focus on developing methanol-free induction systems.

Emoluments: The Project Associate I will be hired with the emoluments of Rs. 37,000/- + HRA and Rs. 30,000/- + HRA (For Non-NET/GATE qualified candidates).

Age limit: The age limit of applicants for Project Associate I will be 35 years as on the date of the interview. (Relaxation is admissible in case of SC/ST/OBC/women as per the government of India instructions).

Post III

3. Project Title: “Investigating the role of prion-like proteins in plant stress and memory responses.” (NABI’s Core)

Principle Investigator: Dr. Charanpreet Kaur, Scientist-D

Positions: Junior Research Fellow (One position)

Duration: The appointment will be initially for two years as JRF. Further up-gradation from JRF to SRF will be on the basis of the submission of progress report and further assessment.

Essential Qualification:

a) M.Sc./M.Tech in any area of life sciences or an equivalent degree.
b) 55% total marks or equivalent score in the qualifying degree (5% relaxation in marks will be given to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD as per GOI norms.
c) In addition to the above, candidates must qualify a national-level test for pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy program. Such tests include doctoral fellowship or admission eligibility tests conducted at the national level by recognized government agencies, such as the University Grants Commission (UGC), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

Desirable Experience: Candidates with experience in molecular biology techniques, rice transformation and plant physiology will be preferred.

Emoluments: Rs. 37000/- + HRA As per the OM, DST/PCPM/Z-06/2022 dated 26.06.2023.

Age limit: 28 years (Relaxation is admissible in the case of SC/ST/OBC/PD and women candidates as per GOI instructions).

Post IV

4. Project Title: “Exploring genetic basis of multiple abiotic stress tolerance mechanism in rice.” (NABI’s Core)

Principle Investigator: Dr. Rajeev Nayan Bahuguna, Scientist-D

Positions: Research Associate –I (One position)

Duration: The initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Extension will be subject to the submission of a progress report and a subsequent evaluation of the candidate’s performance.

Essential Qualification: PhD in Agriculture Biotechnology/ Life Science/ Plant Physiology/ Botany/ Biochemistry with at least two peer-reviewed research papers in science citation indexed (SCI) journal. Candidates who have already submitted their PhD thesis in above subjects will also be eligible (along with proof of submission), but will be hired at SRF level till they receive their degree. (Eligibility criteria as per DST OM No. DST/PCPM/Z06/2022 dated 26.06.2023).

Desirable Experience: Research experience in the area of Molecular Biology, Gene Function analysis, GWAS, Omics (GCMS, LCMS), Plant transformation with at least two peer-reviewed publication in SCI journal.

Emoluments and eligibility: Rs. 58000/- per month plus HRA for RA-1; Rs. 42000/- per month plus HRA for SRF (As per DST OM No. DST/PCPM/Z06/2022 dated 26.06.2023).

5. Project Title: “Biocatalyst-assisted production of bioactive peptide-rich and lactose-free fermented milk product using indigenous native microorganisms.” (NABI Core)

Principle Investigator: Dr. Amit Kumar Rai, Scientist-D

Positions: Senior Research Fellow (One position)

Duration: The Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) is a purely temporary assignment and is tenable for a period of 1 year only, and in exceptional cases, depending upon the progress of the research, the performance, the committee may extend for a period of one year.
Essential Qualification: A. Postgraduate degree in Microbiology/ Life Science/Biotechnology. B. Scholars who are selected through National Eligibility Tests-CSIR-UGC-NET, including Lectureship (Assistant Professorship), GATE and GPAT. C. Two years of research experience and at least one research paper in science citation indexed (SCI) journal.

Desirable qualifications:

  1. Prior research experience demonstrated through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  2. Hands-on experience in microbial fermentation, particularly involving native microbial strains for in situ production of biocatalysts.
  3. Proficiency in chromatographic separation techniques, including HPLC and column chromatography, for analysis of fermentation products and bioactive compounds.

Emoluments: The SRF will be hired with the emoluments of Rs 42,000/month + HRA as per the Govt. guidelines.

Age limit: The age limit of applicants for SRF will be 32 years as on date of interview. (Relaxation is admissible in case of SC/ST/OBC/women as per government of India instructions).

Application Procedure & Other Conditions

  1. All interested candidates may appear for Walk-In-Interview at National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute located at Knowledge city, Sector-81, Mohali, Punjab-140306, on 28.08.2025 at 09:00 A.M. along with the duly filled application form available on the website www.nabi.res.in. (Phone No. 0172-5221245)
  2. Incomplete application forms and applications that are not in proper format may be summarily rejected.
  3. The applications should be submitted strictly as per the prescribed format that can be downloaded from the NABI website.
  4. Candidates applying for more than one post can give their preference by writing different designations in the same application form.
  5. Candidates should ensure that information mentioned in the application form is accurate. Once the application form is submitted no further request regarding any changes/information in the application form will be considered.
  6. The duly filled application form must be submitted at the time of registration at NABI from 09:00 AM to 10:00 AM on 28.08.2025.
  7. The candidates must ascertain their eligibility before applying, as ineligible candidates will not be interviewed.
  8. All the candidates are requested to appear for a Walk-In interview with an application form, experience certificates, publications, and original degree certificates and transcripts.
  9. Original mark sheets, certificates, award/fellowship, etc must be accomplished for verification at the time of the interview and attach one set of attested copies of the documents with the application form.
  10. No TA/DA will be paid for appearing in the interview.
  11. Canvassing in any form or bringing influence, political or otherwise, will lead to disqualification of the candidate(s).
  12. Candidates should strictly adhere to guidelines issued by World Health Organization and Centre Govt/State Govt on Covid-19.
  13. In the event of special circumstances, candidates may request the project investigator (via email) to conduct their interviews online. Such requests must be submitted well in advance, preferably at least one week prior to the scheduled interview date. However, the final decision will be taken by the selection committee to ascertain the special circumstances and allow the candidate(s) for an online interview. The Institute reserves the right to conduct the interview in online/offline mode.
  14. Interview results will be published on the NABI website.

Note: Permission for online interview may be sought from the PI at least one week prior to the interview date and a valid reason must be given for the same.
