The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, invites applications from eligible Indian nationals for multiple research positions. From stream fish monitoring in the Western Ghats to coconut crab conservation in the Nicobar Islands and wetlands-based capacity building, these exciting, field-intensive opportunities allow candidates to contribute to India’s critical biodiversity conservation efforts.

1. Project Associate-I – Stream Fish Monitoring

Project Title: Monitoring Stream Fish Population about Newly Constructed Weirs in Central Western Ghats
PI: Dr. Vidyadhar Atkore

  • No. of Positions: 01

  • Duration: 1 Year

  • Essential Qualification: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks in any discipline of life sciences or environmental sciences from a recognized university.

  • Desirable: Experience in freshwater fish ID, GIS, fieldwork, R, English/Kannada/Hindi proficiency, valid driving license

  • Age Limit: 35 years

  • Salary: ₹37,000 + HRA (NET/GATE), ₹30,000 + HRA (Non-NET)

  • Job Role: Conduct riverine fieldwork in Karnataka, collect ecological data, liaise with the forest department

2. Project Associate-I – Coconut Crab Conservation

Project Title: Comprehensive Conservation Plan for Coconut Crab (Birgus latro

) in Nicobar Archipelago
PI: Dr. P. Pramod

  • No. of Positions: 01

  • Duration: 1 Year (Likely to Extend)

  • Essential Qualification: M.Sc. (55 %+) in relevant disciplines

  • Desirable: Knowledge of invertebrates, remote field conditions, data analysis, GIS, English/Hindi fluency

  • Age Limit: 35 years

  • Salary: ₹37,000 + HRA (NET/GATE), ₹30,000 + HRA (Non-NET)

  • Job Role: Field research on coconut crabs in the Nicobar Islands, and develop conservation plans with stakeholders

3. IT Officer – Wetlands EIACP Resource Partner

Project Title: Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP)
PI: Dr. Goldin Quadros

  • No. of Positions: 01

  • Duration: Until March 2026 (Extendable)

  • Essential Qualification: i) Post-Graduate degree (M.Sc.) or its equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks in life sciences or environmental sciences (Zoology/ Wildlife Biology/ Wildlife Science/ Forestry/ Conservation Biology/ Biodiversity Studies/ Ecological Sciences/ Environmental Studies/Eco-informatics or any allied disciplines) from a recognized university AND ii) Minimum two years’ experience in working with database applications/desktop publishing/website development/social media/related fields.

  • Desirable Qualifications: i) Good understanding of wetland ecology and conservation issues; ii) experience in wetland studies; iii) familiarity with fundamental data analysis and GIS tools; iv) publications in SCI journals; v) excellent communication & interpersonal skills.

  • Age Limit: 30 years

  • Salary: ₹34,000 consolidated

  • Job Role: Website and database management, content creation, GIS mapping, support for Swachhta Action Plan, and other events
