About the Program

CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTECH), invites applications from exceptionally motivated candidates for pursuing doctoral research at CSIR-IMTECH under the aegis of Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi.

CSIR-IMTECH is a multidisciplinary institute with state of the art research facilities, and faculty with research interests in the following frontier areas of modern microbiology (please visit our website http://www.imtech.res.in for information on different research areas and faculty profile).

Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Genetics & Epigenetics, Microbial Genomics, Host-Microbe Interaction, Pathogen Biology, Cellular Trafficking, Microbial Cell Biology, Structural Biology, Drug Designing and Development, Industrial & Environmental Microbiology, Genetic Engineering, Microbial Diversity & Ecology, Bioinformatics & Big Data Analytics, Biochemical Engineering and Medicinal Chemistry.

Eligibility 

Candidates with Master’s Degree (M.Sc./M.Tech/M.Pharm) with minimum aggregate of 55% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent in CGPA in any branch of Science or Technology are eligible to apply. The minimum aggregate of marks in case of OBC(NCL)/SC/ST/Persons with Disability (PwD)/Third Gender candidates are 50% (without rounding off) or equivalent in CGPA. Candidates should also have a valid and tenable National-level fellowship from CSIR-UGC NET/DBT-JRF examination (‘A’ Category only)/DST-INSPIRE Fellowship/ICMR-JRF examination or equivalent fellowship like DBT-BET, RGNF etc.

Candidates with lecturer-ship/Assistant Professor ship only in CSIR-UGC (NET) examination or Candidates selected for working only in ICMR or DBT Projects or Candidates having M.Sc/M.Tech/ M.Pharm with GATE/GPAT are NOT eligible.

OR

Sponsored candidates for Master’s degree in Science with minimum 55% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade for General (UR)/General-EWS and minimum 50% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade for OBC (NCL)/SC/ST, Third Gender and Persons with Disability (PwD). Endorsement (NOC) from the current employer is mandatory.

Selection Process

The eligible candidates will be called for interview either in person at CSIR-IMTech, Chandigarh or through online mode. The interview will be aimed at assessing the candidate’s knowledge, critical analysis, logical reasoning and aptitude for scientific research. The result of the selected candidates will be declared on AcSIR website. The fee for the PhD program is as per AcSIR fee structure.

In case, the interviews are held in person at CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh, then those appearing for the interview must be prepared to stay in Chandigarh for three days, which is the approximate time required to finalize the process. No TA/DA or any other expenses will be paid for appearing in the interview.

The application should be submitted online at http://acsir.res.in. The last date for submitting the application is September 17^th, 2023.

Important to Note:

1. The document verification process cannot be followed in the online mode of interviews.  Therefore, all shortlisting, selection etc. would be provisional and will be confirmed only after verification of all relevant documents. In case of any deficiency of any type in the documents, the candidature would automatically stand cancelled any time on finding such a deficiency.Please note that valid proofs of Fellowship awarded and other necessary documents are mandatory for appearing in the interview.
2. The candidates who are waiting for results of qualifying examinations may also appear for interview but their joining is subject to clearing the eligibility criteria.
3. The fellowship MUST be valid and tenable at the time of joining CSIR-IMTECH.
4.   Admission of candidates having DST-INSPIRE fellowship or any other fellowship may stand cancelled in case candidate fails to obtain fellowship from the respective funding agencies. CSIR-IMTech will not provide any financial support to such candidates.
5. Candidates must also state their present occupation/enrolment status in the institute or university/information about fellowship activation etc., in the AcSIR application. Any concealment may result in cancellation of admission at any stage.
6. Mere fulfillment of the minimum requirements stipulated in the advertisement would not automatically entitle a person for selection.
7.  Canvassing in any form and/or bringing in any influence, political or otherwise, will be treated as a disqualification.

Here are five possible interview questions that can be asked in the technical round for the successful PhD candidates, along with their answers:

1. Question: Can you elaborate on your research interests and how they align with the frontier areas of modern microbiology mentioned in the program description? Answer: Certainly. My research interests lie in the area of microbial genomics and molecular microbiology. I am particularly intrigued by understanding the genetic basis of microbial interactions with their hosts. This aligns well with CSIR-IMTECH’s focus on Host-Microbe Interactions and Pathogen Biology.

2. Question: Describe a specific project or research experience from your Master’s program that showcases your critical analysis and logical reasoning skills. Answer: During my Master’s, I worked on a project related to drug design targeting specific microbial enzymes. This involved analyzing protein structures, predicting binding sites, and designing potential inhibitors. This experience honed my logical reasoning skills and ability to critically assess molecular interactions.

3. Question: How would you approach a complex research problem in the field of microbial genetics, considering both experimental design and data analysis? Answer: I would begin by thoroughly reviewing existing literature to identify gaps and potential hypotheses. I would then design experiments to test these hypotheses, ensuring controls and appropriate statistical methods. For data analysis, I’d use bioinformatics tools to analyze genomics data, looking for patterns and correlations.

4. Question: Can you provide an example of a challenging situation you encountered during your previous research work and how you addressed it? Answer: During my Master’s project, I faced difficulties in obtaining consistent results for a critical experiment. I carefully reviewed my experimental setup and identified a potential flaw in sample preparation. I adjusted the protocol, re-did the experiment, and achieved more consistent outcomes.

5. Question: How do you plan to contribute to the research community if you’re selected for this program? Answer: If given the opportunity, I aspire to collaborate with fellow researchers, share insights at scientific conferences, and publish research findings in reputable journals. Additionally, I’d be keen on engaging in science outreach activities to communicate research advancements to the broader audience.
