Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar, an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India invites applications from Indian Nationals to join in the following position.
Name of position: Project Associate-I (01 position.)
Project title:DBT project entitled “Technological innovations for development of functional foods from ethnic fermented foods of the Indian Himalayas”.
Age Limit: The candidate should be below 35 years in age, as on 3rd July, 2023. Age relaxation will be given to the candidates as per Govt

Fellowship: Rs. 31,000/- + HRA@16% (for NET/GATE candidate) / @₹ 25,000/- + HRA HRA@16% (for NonNET/GATE candidate)
Eligibility:
- Masters in Biotechnology, life sciences and allied branches and having secured 60% aggregate marks (relaxation will be given as per guideline) are eligible to apply.
- Preference will be given to candidates having prior experience in microbiology related works.

- Question: Can you provide an overview of your academic and professional background in biotechnology or life sciences? Answer: I have completed my Masters in Biotechnology with a specialization in microbial biotechnology. During my academic journey, I gained a strong foundation in various aspects of life sciences, including molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry. Additionally, I have actively engaged in research projects and practical laboratory work, which allowed me to develop hands-on skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
- Question: The project focuses on developing functional foods from ethnic fermented foods of the Indian Himalayas. How do you perceive the potential impact and significance of this research? Answer: The utilization of ethnic fermented foods from the Indian Himalayas for the development of functional foods holds immense potential and significance. These foods are deeply rooted in local traditions and culture and are known to possess unique microbial communities and bioactive compounds. By exploring their properties and developing functional foods, we can not only preserve the culinary heritage of the region but also contribute to promoting health and well-being through the consumption of nutritious and bioactive-rich products.
- Question: Have you worked on any microbiology-related projects or research? Could you share your experience and specific techniques or methodologies you employed? Answer: Yes, during my Master’s program, I had the opportunity to work on a microbiology-related research project. Specifically, I investigated the antimicrobial potential of plant-derived compounds against pathogenic bacteria. In this project, I employed techniques such as microbial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and molecular biology methods like PCR and gene expression analysis. The research experience helped me develop proficiency in microbial isolation, identification, and characterization, as well as data analysis and interpretation.
- Question: The project requires expertise in developing technological innovations for functional food development. Can you share any instances where you utilized innovative approaches or techniques in your previous work? Answer: In a previous research internship, I worked on developing a novel encapsulation technique for enhancing the stability and bioavailability of probiotic bacteria in functional food products. This involved the utilization of specialized encapsulation materials and optimization of encapsulation parameters through Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology. The innovative approach aimed to improve the survival and delivery of probiotics to the target site, ultimately enhancing their functional properties in the food matrix.
- Question: How do you ensure the quality and reliability of research data in your work? Can you provide examples of your attention to detail and accuracy in experiments? Answer: Ensuring the quality and reliability of research data is of utmost importance in scientific work. To maintain accuracy and reliability, I always adhere to rigorous experimental protocols and follow good laboratory practices. I pay meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of the experimental process, from sample preparation to data collection and analysis. I maintain detailed records and documentation to ensure traceability and reproducibility of results. Additionally, I frequently cross-check and validate experimental data, and perform statistical analyses to assess the significance of findings and minimize errors.
