A Walk-in-Interview will be held on April 12, 2023 at 12:00 noon at the Unified Academic Campus of Bose Institute, Block-EN, Plot No-80, Sector-V, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 700 091 for one (01) temporary position of Senior Project Associate for the Intramural Project entitled “Understanding the response of a few phytochemicals on bacterial quorum sensing and associated biofilm formation” under the guidance of Prof. Gaurab Gangopadhyay, Division of Plant Biology. The position is initially for One (01) year and renewable up to three (03) years subject to successful assessment every year.

Essential Qualification –
- Master’s Degree in Life Sciences / Biotechnology / Medicine from a recognized University or equivalent; and
- Four years’ experience in Research and Development in Industrial and Academic Institutions or Science and Technology Organizations and Scientific activities and services
OR
Doctoral Degree in Science / Engineering / Technology / Pharma / MD / MS from a recognized University or equivalent
Desirable Qualification – Candidates with knowledge and experience in plant science will get preferences.

Answer: Along with a strong foundation in the Life Sciences, I have extensive experience in the areas of microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. I have worked on several research projects focusing on antimicrobial resistance and the development of novel drug targets for infectious diseases. I am proficient in various techniques, including gene expression analysis, protein purification, and assay development, which could be valuable for this project. - Could you describe your experience in working with quorum sensing and biofilm formation in bacteria?
Answer: During my previous research projects, I have worked on various bacterial species, including pathogenic strains, to study their quorum sensing and biofilm formation mechanisms. I have experience in designing experiments to test the efficacy of various compounds and drugs in disrupting biofilm formation and reducing pathogenicity. Additionally, I have experience in transcriptome and proteome analysis to understand the changes in gene expression during quorum sensing. - How do you plan to approach the research question of the project, and what are some potential challenges you foresee?
Answer: I plan to approach the research question of the project by first conducting a literature review to understand the current state of knowledge regarding the effect of phytochemicals on bacterial quorum sensing and biofilm formation. I will then design experiments to test the effect of a few selected phytochemicals on the target bacterial species, followed by a detailed analysis of their gene expression profiles. Some potential challenges I foresee include the optimization of assay conditions and the selection of appropriate phytochemicals. - Could you describe a time when you faced a setback in your research project and how you overcame it?
Answer: During my previous research project, I encountered a technical issue with a key assay that led to inconsistent results. After troubleshooting the problem, I realized that the issue was related to the assay buffer’s composition. I modified the buffer composition, re-optimized the assay conditions, and conducted extensive validation experiments to ensure that the assay was working correctly. This experience taught me the importance of rigorous troubleshooting and attention to detail in research.
