Advertisement for the Internship position
We are looking for an intern who can assist us with fieldwork in the Western Ghats forests in Goa. The work will involve assisting in conducting vegetation sampling within an established vegetation plot for taxonomic identification, structural data collection and phenological monitoring followed by data entry of the sampled vegetation into spreadsheets.
Qualifications: B.Sc/M.Sc in Botany or in a relevant discipline (such as forestry/ ecology etc)
Essential:
- Good field plant-identification skills
- Some experience conducting fieldwork and vegetation sampling
- Willingness to work in rough conditions
- Must know the basics of plant sample collection for herbarium preparation
- Must be able to handle a camera for vegetation photography
- Must be willing to travel and work with a team or individually
Desirable:
- Prior experience in conducting vegetation surveys
- Prior experience related to ‘Population ecology’ like deriving vegetation diversity indices will be preferable.
- Taxonomic knowledge
- Photography for vegetation identification
- Good communication skills and ability to speak the regional language of Konkani / Marathi.
Responsibilities:
- Collecting data in the field for vegetation
- Plant identification in the field, as well as with floras, photographs and identification keys
- Documentation
- Communication of the research outcomes
Costs: All travel costs to and from the field site will be covered
Stipend: INR 20,000/- per month
Accommodation: No accommodation will be provided
Duration: Initially we are looking for an intern for the period of six months (December 01, 2022, to May 31, 2023), however, the position may be extended upon satisfactory performance.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to hone their botanical & forest ecology skills in the field and understand the functional complexity of forest ecosystems in the Western Ghats. They will also get exposure to other research being conducted in the lab by understanding the working of vegetation phenological cameras, satellite data interpretation and analysis, and climate change studies.
Certificates of internship and letters of recommendation to other institutions or academic programs can be provided to the intern.
