The MSc programme in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics is a unique dual specialization degree programme that builds competence in both biotechnology and computational biology/ bioinformatics.

The MSc in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics programme is an interdisciplinary programme
that positions you at the cutting edge of the basic and applied sciences, suitable both for
academia and industry.

Degree – Master of Science in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

Duration – 2 years

Students of this programme are provided extensive training in cell and molecular biology,
genome editing, computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics and so on. The
faculty also ensures that the students get a high quality research experience, especially
through their dissertation work. They also get several opportunities to meet and interact with high-profile scientists from across the globe.

PLACEMENTS

IBAB launched its first educational programme, the Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics,
in 2002. Since then it has always facilitated the placement of students in industry or
academia. It has maintained a 95% or higher placement for each batch of students. Details of the student-wise placements of recent outgoing MSc batches are to be found here, and of older batches here.

ELIGIBILITY

1. A Bachelor’s degree in any branch of science/technology/medicine (with degrees such
   as BSc, BE, BTech, BPharm, MBBS, BDS and BVSc). The candidate is required to
   obtain at least 50% in his/her Bachelor’s programme overall.
2. The eligible subject areas are: Life sciences (zoology, botany, genetics, human
   biology, general life sciences, ecology, environmental biology), bioinformatics,
   biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, any branch of engineering,
   pharmaceutical sciences, agriculture, medicine, dentistry, horticulture, forestry and
   veterinary sciences.
3. There is no age bar for applying.
4. Applicants who have had a break in their education or have been working for a few
   years are also eligible.
5. Indian nationals, NRIs and foreign nationals who have passed the qualifying degree
   examination outside of India, must submit the Equivalence Certificate issued by the
   Association of Indian Universities along with their application.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE

The institute reserves the right to change the admission procedure, including the exam dates, the pattern, the duration and the syllabus of the examination.

(i) Apply online :

Applicants need to fill up an online application form by paying the following fees:

For students from India : 600/-
For NRI/Foreign students: 1200/-

(ii) Entrance examination:

Applicants will be short listed based on a proctored online examination. The details will be intimated later.

The entrance test to the MSc in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (2022–2024) will cover the subjects physics, mathematics, chemistry, and the life sciences. The details of the syllabus and pattern will be updated on the web page.

Any change in the examination pattern will be intimated to the applicants.

(iii) Admission interview:

The short listed candidates will be interviewed either in person at IBAB, or in online mode. Candidates will be intimated in due course about the date and mode of interview.

CONFIRMATION OF ADMISSION

Selected candidates will receive an offer letter, with detailed instructions regarding the fee payment schedule. These candidates will have to confirm their admission by paying a secrutiy deposit as listed below. This security deposit is refundable only on successful completion of the course.

Resident Indian nationals: Rs. 20,000/-

NRIs/foreign nationals: Rs. 40,000/-

Students will have to submit their original documents at the time of admission. All admissions will be provisional, subject to submission and verification of original documents at the time of admission and approval by Bangalore University.

Set of documents to be provided at the time of admission –

1. Original  marks cards (10th class/12th class/ under-graduation)
2. Migration certificate: You must apply to your college for a migration certificate immediately after completion of the degree course.
3. A few other documents may be required, which will be intimated to selected candidates.

Note: Admission is liable to be cancelled if any fraudulent records are found even after securing admission. Any fees paid already will not be refunded.

SCHOLARSHIPS

A scholarship will be awarded based on the performance of the student each year, and the financial need of the student.
