Along with dedicated high-quality teaching, the faculty at the Department of Biological Sciences are actively engaged in working on various research problems ranging from basic sciences to applied sciences using cutting-edge technologies employing multidisciplinary approaches. For carrying out the various challenging research work, our PhD scholars are the primary workforces. Any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of Cellular and Molecular biology, Molecular immunology, Cancer biology, Developmental biology, Structural biology, Chemical biology, Plant biology, Plant molecular and developmental biology, Plant genetics, Plant tissue culture, Molecular Microbiology, and Plant virus, Behavioral biology, Ecology, Evolutionary biology, Genetics, Marine biology, Microbial ecology, Neurobiology, Biodiversity, Microbiology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences or MPharm, Physiology, Human Physiology, Medical Biotechnology, and theoretical biology, Epigenetics and Chromatin Biology. Applicants must have any one of the following qualifications:
- Qualified a National Eligibility exam that provides a 5-year PhD fellowship such as CSIR-JRF / UGC-JRF / DBT-JRF-A / ICMR-JRF / DBT-BINC-JRF / Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship.
- INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (should be in possession of provisional selection letter at the time of Interview).
Please note that there are no vacancies for PhD students in the laboratories of Annagiri Sumana, Anindita Bhadra, Bidisha Sinha, Rupak Datta and Supratim Datta.

Project funded PhD student(s)
1. A project funded PhD position is available in Integrative Taxonomy and Microbial Ecology Research Group (PI- Professor Punyasloke Bhadury) to address questions pertaining to marine biodiscovery and assessing the health of coastal oceans in a changing climate.
Essential Qualification: Master’s degree holder including Integrated MS in any discipline of Biological Sciences/Environmental Sciences/Biotechnology with a minimum of 55% marks can apply. Candidates who have qualified for one of the National eligibility exams – CSIR-UGC/ NET LS/GATE/JAM/JGEEBILS/ICMR-JRF/ etc. may be preferred. Previous proven background in undertaking extensive field work in aquatic ecosystems, aquatic chemistry, and ecology-based measurements as well as developing new approaches for assessing the ecological quality of aquatic ecosystems would be preferred. Candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP based on the above-highlighted themes. Highly motivated candidates who also have a proven track record in the area of marine biodiscovery theme will be also preferred.
Institute funded Ph.D. position in the laboratory of Tapas K Sengupta
An Institute funded Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory of Tapas K Sengupta to work in the area of molecular microbiology to understand the regulatory mechanisms of bacterial biofilm formation and implications in bioremediation and/or therapeutics.
Minimum qualifications – Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of life sciences (with minimum 55% marks); qualified one of the National eligibility exams.
Additional criteria: Academic background and experience in the area of Microbiology/Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and strong communication skills are desirable.
Institute funded Ph.D. position in the laboratory of Mohit Prasad
An Institute-funded Ph.D. position is available in the lab of Dr. Mohit Prasad to study Metazaon morphogenesis employing the Drosophila oogenesis model.
Essential qualification – M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech/MVSc/MSc degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks); qualified one of the National eligibility exams.
Additional criteria: Background in the area of Life Science/ Biotechnology/ Genetics/ Cell biology will be desirable. Preference will be given to any previous work experience in a wet laboratory. The candidate must have had Mathematics in class 10th and 12th standard.
Institute funded Ph.D. position in the laboratory of Malancha Ta
An Institute-funded Ph.D. is available in the lab of Dr. Malancha Ta in the broad area of study of human mesenchymal stem cells under different physiological stress conditions.
Additional criteria – The preferred background should be in the area of Life Science /Biotechnology /Physiology /Human genetics, and strong communication skills are desirable. Working experience in a wet lab with cell culture and molecular biology techniques would be preferred.
